JJ Kohl's knee sprain is the only FIU story that matters during the bye

FIU beat LIU 20-3 to close nonconference play at 2-2, but Kohl left at halftime with a knee sprain and Zach Marker finished the game. What the bye week should sort out.

JJ Kohl threw for 135 yards on 6-of-11 passing with a touchdown and an interception against Long Island University on Saturday, then watched the second half in street clothes. Kohl suffered a knee sprain and was held out after halftime, with Willie Simmons saying afterward that his quarterback could have gone back in but was kept out as a precaution. FIU won 20-3 anyway, improved to 2-2, and closed a four-game nonconference stretch that never took the team outside Florida. Now the Panthers sit out Week 5 entirely, and the most valuable thing that can happen this week happens in a training room rather than on a field.

That is the whole shape of the bye. FIU has no game, and nothing on Saturday's national slate moves Conference USA's standings in a way that should pull a Panthers fan to the couch. The Week 6 conference opener at home against New Mexico State, where the simulations give FIU about a 79.6 percent chance, is the next thing that matters, and it matters considerably more with a healthy Kohl than without him.

Why the injury lands harder than the numbers suggest

Four starts in, Kohl's log still swings wildly. Turnovers marred his debut at South Florida. He answered with 367 yards and three touchdown passes against Buffalo. Then came the Shula Bowl at Florida Atlantic, where three first-quarter interceptions buried FIU in a loss. He also finished that game after halftime chest X-rays. Start four ended at intermission with the knee. There has been no stretch of consistency long enough to tell FIU fans what they actually have.

Zach Marker's second half helps a little. He went 6-of-10 for 92 yards in his first game action since August 2025. Root for Kohl to practice fully, and root for the staff to be boring about it. A knee sprain in a bye week is the best possible timing for an injury FIU would otherwise be guessing about.

The other name to watch is Kyle McNeal. FIU's leading receiver missed a second consecutive game against LIU after getting hurt against Buffalo, with no diagnosis or return timeline made public. Whoever plays quarterback in the opener would rather have him back than not.

What the rest of the roster already gave you

Everything outside the quarterback room trended the right way in the LIU win, which is why the bye feels more like a pause than a crisis.

The defense kept LIU out of the end zone for a second straight game and sacked its quarterback three times.

Kenton Simmons had two of them plus three tackles for loss, and DeeJay Holmes added one.

That pass rush will be tested harder by New Mexico State and Jacksonville State than it was by an 0-5 FCS team.

The larger question the bye doesn't answer

Conference USA media put FIU on 60 percent of ballots in the preseason Bowl Confidence Index, sixth in a 10-team league. That is roughly where the Panthers still sit. They are projected for about 4.6 conference wins, with a one-in-five shot at the title game.

Getting there starts with the New Mexico State game, and it starts a lot more comfortably if the man who takes the first snap is the one who was throwing them in the first half Saturday. Check the full week at the interactive guide, and the methodology for how the projections are built.
