Nick Minicucci went 4-for-8 for 24 yards at Virginia, left late in the second quarter, and spent the rest of a 42-3 loss standing on the sideline on crutches with an apparent right leg injury. Braden Streeter replaced him and finished 2-for-16 for 9 yards with two interceptions; third-string Riley Trujillo went 1-for-3 in mop-up duty. Ryan Carty did not dress it up afterward, saying the Blue Hens "got our butts kicked by a really good football team" and that the plan "was kind of built around [Minicucci] being him, and that doesn't help us" once he was hurt.
That is the sentence Delaware fans should sit with this week. Not the score, Virginia was going to be hard regardless, but a head coach conceding that the offense is designed around one player's presence. Minicucci led Conference USA in 2025 with 3,683 passing yards and 3,918 yards of total offense, with 20 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing scores.
No diagnosis or timeline had been reported by the day after the game. That uncertainty is the whole week.
Liberty, Friday, 7 p.m. ET on CBSSN
Delaware hosts Liberty at 7 p.m. Eastern on Friday, on CBSSN, in the Conference USA opener for both teams. Liberty won 59-30 in Lynchburg last November, Evan Dickens running for 217 yards and four touchdowns. Minicucci threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns that day and it barely mattered.
The model gives Delaware a 15% chance to win. That is low, and it reflects a team that just got blown out with its starting quarterback in street clothes. The betting market is friendlier, Liberty is favored by 6.5, but neither number should be mistaken for comfort.
What makes the outcome worth your Friday night is the league math behind it. Both teams enter 0-0 in Conference USA. A Delaware win puts its chances of reaching the conference championship game at roughly 27%; a loss drops that to about 8%. Those are two different seasons, not two stops on the same road, and the difference gets decided in one night against Liberty.
What to actually watch
Whether Minicucci warms up. Everything else follows from that. If he plays and moves normally, Delaware's passing game is the reason this is a competitive night. If he is limited or out, the matchup gets ugly fast. Liberty's pass defense ranks 13th nationally at 152.5 yards allowed per game, and Delaware's run offense ranks 132nd at 98.0 yards per game. That is a team asked to win on the ground when it has not been able to.
The Streeter question deserves a fairer hearing than Virginia gave it. Three weeks ago at Vanderbilt, when Minicucci briefly left after a hit to his throwing arm, Streeter went 4-for-5 for 58 yards and directed a 10-play, 82-yard touchdown drive, converting a third-and-8 with a 33-yard throw to Da'Wain Lofton. Streeter has looked like a usable emergency option and like a disaster, both in the same month. Friday would be the tiebreaker.
The defense has earned better than it got. Even in the 42-3 loss, Colin Gallagher made a career-high 13 tackles, KT Seay added 10, and Blake Matthews posted career highs with 11 tackles and 2.0 sacks. If Delaware is going to steal this, it looks like a low-scoring, field-position night. Which also means Tucker Smack matters. His 39-yarder was Delaware's only score at Virginia, and in the version of Friday where Delaware wins, he is probably kicking three of them.
Delaware's whole October runs through this building and the three Tuesday games that follow. Nobody else's result changes that. Carty said the plan was built around Minicucci being himself, and if Minicucci cannot go, Streeter is the only version of that plan Delaware has left.
Full numbers are in the interactive guide, and the methodology explains how the projections are built.
