Cal's defense held Clemson to 10 points for three quarters last Friday night. Then Gideon Davidson broke a 75-yard run to seal it, and Clemson finished with 255 rushing yards as a team. Davidson alone averaged 7.2 yards a carry on 22 carries.
That is what Cal fans carry into Las Vegas. The defense has been the best part of this team, and it still could not produce the one fourth-quarter stop the game hung on. California lost to Clemson 24-10 in Week 4.
The matchup that decides Saturday
California plays at UNLV on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 12:30 p.m. PT on CBSSN, and the Rebels are coming off exactly the kind of game that should worry you. In a 38-10 win at Akron, Jai'Den Thomas piled up 167 yards from scrimmage, 113 rushing, 54 receiving, and three touchdowns on 15 carries, while quarterback Jackson Arnold threw for 290 yards and three scores.
So the thing to watch is simple and concrete. Watch first and second down against Thomas. Cal's front kept Clemson in manageable spots for three quarters before the dam broke on one long run. Michael Hutchings' group does not need to be perfect here. It needs to leave UNLV in third and long instead of third and three, and to keep Thomas from turning one crease into 70 yards.
The model gives Cal a 22% chance to win this one, and a preview listed UNLV as roughly a 2.5-point home favorite with both teams 2-2. Cal is the underdog in a non-conference game against a Mountain West team. That is the honest shape of the week.
Whether the offense can help at all
Adam Mohammed, Cal's leading rusher with 336 yards, left the Clemson game early in the third quarter with a left-knee injury; Lupoi has since said he believes Mohammed will be fine, but Cal is not obligated to release an injury report for a non-conference game, so you may not know until he takes a snap. The team total was 86 on 27 carries.
Mohammed has been the run game. If he plays and looks like himself, Cal can control tempo and shorten the game, which is the single most useful thing it can do for a defense that struggles when opponents get rolling downhill. If he is limited, Sagapolutele has to carry an offense that just posted a career-low 119 yards against a real front.
Special teams belongs on the same list. The low 39-yard punt that Bryant Wesco Jr. returned 65 yards broke a 10-10 tie, and Lupoi called it "a killer," adding, "The pain we put upon ourselves, we've got to execute at a higher level, starting with me, finding those answers". He had already flagged that unit after Wagner. A clean punting and coverage day in Vegas would be its own small piece of evidence that he is finding them.
Why a Mountain West road trip carries weight
Cal did not change coaches to keep doing what it was doing. The school parted with Justin Wilcox during his ninth season, and he left with a 48-55 record and five bowl berths, including three straight bowl seasons, a plateau the administration decided was no longer enough. Tosh Lupoi, a former Cal player and assistant who spent four seasons as Oregon's defensive coordinator, became the 35th head coach in December. He was hired to build a defense and raise the ceiling.
There is also a small ledger with this opponent. The last meeting was the 2024 LA Bowl, which UNLV won 24-13 to finish an 11-3 season, the best of the program's FBS era, while Cal arrived having lost its starting quarterback after three games and its head coach ten days before kickoff. The instability that hung over both sidelines that day now sits almost entirely on Cal's side of the rematch. Winning this one would not settle anything about the season. Losing it would make the next two ACC home games feel much heavier.
