Myles Bradley's record afternoon arrives just as Miami's quarterback room gets thin

Bradley's 4.5 sacks led six team sacks and a scoreless first half that held USF to 83 total yards, right before a MAC opener at a suddenly shorthanded Miami.

Myles Bradley put South Florida's quarterback on the ground four and a half times Saturday, believed to be a program record, and knocked the ball loose twice, recovering one himself. Behind him, USF's offense managed only 83 total yards in a scoreless first half. But six team sacks and a run defense that finally held its ground is not a moral victory dressed up as progress. It is the first four quarters this season where Joe Bowden's unit looked like a MAC defense.

That matters because of who Bowden inherited. He was elevated to defensive coordinator before spring practice, taking over a group that had to replace every player the conference honored after 2025, and through three weeks the returners who were supposed to carry it could not stop the run. Saturday was the first time the names on the stat sheet and the yards on the ground told the same story. Bowling Green lost to South Florida 14-6 in Week 4.

Miami, Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+

Bowling Green opens MAC play at Yager Stadium, and the timing is unusually kind. Miami's David McComb threw for 312 yards and two touchdowns against UConn before leaving in the fourth quarter after injuring his left knee; Caleb Heavner finished the win. A pass rush that just produced six sacks gets to go hunting against a quarterback room that just saw David McComb leave with a left knee injury.

Temper it accordingly. Our simulations give Bowling Green a 26% chance in Oxford; ESPN's predictor is far harsher, at 87.4% for Miami with the RedHawks favored by roughly two touchdowns. And the defensive breakthrough came with a caveat. D.J. Crowther finished with 143 rushing yards on 23 carries because Miami-style closing drives are exactly what Bowling Green has not yet stopped.

Why the defense has to be the story

The offense is not going to rescue this. Jay Kastantin went 16-of-28 for 122 yards, ending the game on a fourth-and-16 throw he said came up "a little short". The job is his, settled, without ever becoming a weapon. Austyn Dendy reclaimed the lead back role with 18 carries for 48 yards, 2.7 a pop, with no Falcon back topping 50 yards or breaking anything long. Greg Nosal's offense has produced 6 points' worth of field goals in its most competitive game of the year. Expecting it to outscore anyone Saturday is wishful.

So watch the edges. Watch whether Bradley draws a chip and a back on every dropback, and whether the Falcons still get home when Miami slides protection to him. Watch the run defense, because that is what separated Saturday from the three games before it.

George, after Saturday, said the team has been in these one-score games and "one game, one time is going to turn for us," while conceding the offense has to block better and execute under pressure. This is the week the schedule stops punishing him for it.

Nothing else on the board Saturday moves Bowling Green's season. Put the afternoon into Oxford and see whether Bradley can do it twice.
