Wisconsin promised a physical running team and then threw for 302 yards in a half

Colton Joseph and Tyrell Henry carried the 54-10 win over Eastern Michigan while the run game stalled. Whether Abu Sama plays at Penn State decides what Wisconsin actually is Saturday.

Colton Joseph threw for 302 yards in the first half against Eastern Michigan, a Wisconsin single-half record, and finished 23 of 33 for 362 yards and three touchdowns with 46 more on the ground and a rushing score, 408 total yards, tied for the third-highest single-game total in school history. Tyrell Henry caught 14 of those passes for 160 yards and a touchdown, breaking Matt Nyquist's 1995 school record of 13. Wisconsin won 54-10 at home. And almost none of that looked like the offense Jeff Grimes has spent a year describing, a physical group in the mold of the 2021 Baylor offense he built with offensive line coach Eric Mateos, which ran for 219.3 yards a game, 10th in the FBS. Wisconsin's backs got 75 yards on 20 carries. The whole team averaged 3.9 a rush.

The reason matters. Abu Sama, who had 107 yards on eight carries against Western Illinois, warmed up, was medically cleared, and still did not play. "He practiced most of the week, he wasn't able to hit the whole week," Luke Fickell said. "They cleared him to play, and I said I'm not sure he's ready." So the flattest rushing day of the young season came with the leading back on the sideline, which means the game answered a question about the passing game and dodged the one about Wisconsin's identity as a physical run team.

Penn State asks that question Saturday, and whether Sama is in uniform is the first thing to look for. With Sama, Wisconsin can try to shorten the game, keep Penn State's offense on the bench and play the version of itself the staff keeps promising.

The last meeting, at Camp Randall in October 2024, was tight before Penn State pulled away 28-13 on a 21-3 second half, with Kaytron Allen running for 86 yards and a score and Jaylen Reed taking an interception back 19 yards. Wisconsin has generally been in these games for a while and then been buried in one stretch.

Which is why the two plays worth remembering from last week are defensive. Mason Posa picked off a pass and returned it 24 yards to set up a touchdown. Cooper Catalano scooped Sebastian Cheeks' strip sack and scored from 10 yards out. Fickell wants more of that. "We've got to challenge ourselves to be a little bit more aggressive. We've got to take some shots." He also said of the early 7-3 deficit that he "saw some things that I don't know that I had seen for the last couple of years," and that the passing game "didn't hold Colton back." Take the encouragement, note the opponent.

The caution sits on the same defense. Eastern Michigan opened the game with a 67-yard touchdown drive, with coverage lapses and a penalty in the secondary, before Wisconsin clamped down. Penn State will spend the first quarter hunting that earlier version.

And Joseph's big day came with a thinned receiver room. Malachi Coleman and Jaylon Domingeaux were unavailable, and Henry dislocated a finger on the opening drive and played the rest of the way to his record. If Henry is limited, the group that produced 362 passing yards gets thin fast.

The model gives Wisconsin about an 8 percent chance in Happy Valley. This is not a game the season needs. It is a game that tells you which team Wisconsin has been building. If Sama runs, the line moves people and the score is still in reach in the third quarter, the rest of this schedule, Michigan State at home next week, UCLA, Maryland, looks different. The interactive guide has the full week, and the methodology explains the numbers.

Nothing else on Saturday's board changes Wisconsin's picture. Watch the injury report, then watch the first Badgers running play.
