Brock Glenn threw all 32 of Western Kentucky's pass attempts at Indiana, went 17-of-32 for 120 yards with an interception, and led the Hilltoppers in rushing with 11 carries for 30 yards. Rodney Tisdale Jr., the CUSA Freshman of the Year who started WKU's last six games in 2025 and threw for 1,432 yards and nine touchdowns, does not appear in the box score at all. The reported reason for the change was health, the Bowling Green Daily News described Glenn as the less dinged-up option, and the day before the game Tyson Helton had said both quarterbacks would be "100% ready" and that usage would likely be "status quo."
So the most interesting thing about WKU's roster right now happened by default rather than by decision. Glenn is not a walk-on pressed into duty. He came from Florida State with 16 games and seven starts, including the 2023 ACC Championship Game and the Orange Bowl. He is a real option. But 3.8 yards per attempt against Indiana did not make anyone's case, and nothing published since has said who starts Saturday.
That is what makes Mercyhurst worth actual attention rather than a glance at the score. The model gives WKU about a 95% chance to win, so the score is not the story. The question is what the staff does with a comfortable afternoon. If Tisdale is healthy and still does not play, that is a depth-chart answer whether Helton calls it one or not. If both play into the second half, fans learn that the competition is genuinely live going into league play. And if Tisdale takes the first snap and stays in while the game is close, the Indiana arrangement really was just about who could stand up that week.
Why the offense has no excuses left
Bodie Reeder was hired in part because, before coming to Bowling Green, he ran Middle Tennessee offenses that finished second in CUSA in passing in both 2024 and 2025, behind only WKU. Against Indiana, Glenn threw for 120 yards with no receiver topping 30 yards. Mercyhurst is a different proposition. The Lakers are allowing 224.3 rushing yards per game, and their season consists of road losses to Youngstown State (10-43), New Mexico State (14-51) and New Mexico (7-70) before a 49-20 home win over Glenville State. Whoever plays quarterback should be comfortable. A day of sustained drives and a receiver finally clearing 100 yards would be the first evidence that the early-season numbers were about the opponents.
Watch the right side of the line, too. Karsten Upchurch, WKU's returning starter at right tackle, was hurt with 6:22 left at Indiana and carried off on a backboard and golf cart; Helton said afterward it "looked like he had a back injury of some kind" and that he had not yet spoken to team doctors. ESPN's roster page lists Upchurch's status as "Active" with no injury designation, though that is a general roster status rather than a confirmed medical clearance to play. Protection matters more than it looks like it should against a team this overmatched.
The parts already working
The clearest good news of this season has come from new arrivals. Ajay Allen ran 21 times for 102 yards and scored both WKU touchdowns in his debut at Nevada, and true freshman Jonathan Stafford Jr. caught five passes for 48 yards in his first college game. Those two are not the whole rebuild, but they are the proof that individual additions can play right away. Seeing them get volume Saturday, Allen with real carries, Stafford as more than a checkdown, is a more useful sign than the final margin.
Defensively, the standard WKU has not come close to yet was set in the other direction at Georgia. The Hilltoppers allowed 493 yards, 259 passing and 234 rushing, with no interceptions, with Georgia converting 7 of 12 third downs. Jaylen Wester forced two fumbles and Xavion Griffin recovered one, which was most of the resistance. Holding them down, with third-down stops rather than just talent gaps, is the version of this game that means something in October.
Keeping the 0-3 in proportion
The record looks worse than the season has actually gone relative to expectations. Indiana was a 44.5-point favorite; the 38-0 final came in 6.5 points short of that number. WKU has scored 34 points in three games, which is the genuinely alarming part, but none of those results touched the conference standings, and Helton's baseline is a 57-36 record with seven straight bowl trips and at least eight wins in every season from 2021 through 2025. This program knows how to be good. The simulations still give WKU only a 3.7% chance of reaching the CUSA championship game, which is what an 0-3 start does to a projection, and conference play begins next week at New Mexico State.
No other game this weekend changes WKU's path; the Hilltoppers control it themselves starting next week at New Mexico State. So watch who walks out with the first-team offense, and whether the game ever stays close enough for that choice to mean anything.
