Washington's aggression got expensive right before the Big Ten opener

The Huskies scored 48 on Eastern Washington and still flagged themselves 101 yards. Minnesota visits Husky Stadium Saturday night with a poll return on the line.

Jacob Lane threw a punch in a third-quarter scuffle and Xe'ree Alexander drew targeting on the same snap, and both Washington defensive starters walked off ejected during an Eastern Washington drive that included 48 yards of Husky penalties. Washington won 48-16 and closed the nonconference schedule 3-0, so the flags cost nothing but field position against an FCS opponent. They will cost more against Minnesota on Saturday night.

The rest of the afternoon was the game Washington fans had been waiting three weeks for. Demond Williams Jr. went 27 of 33 for 373 yards and four touchdowns, tying his career high, and he had all four scores by halftime as Washington built a 31-10 lead. True freshman Brian Bonner Jr. ran six times for 81 yards, including a 55-yard burst, and became the first Husky running back to lead the team in rushing this season. After averaging just 20 points in the wins over Washington State and Utah State, Washington scored on five of its first six possessions. The backfield that lost Quaid Carr and Jayden Limar to injury finally produced something, even if roughly 55 of Bonner's 81 yards came on the one carry.

The defense is where the week's actual question lives. Ryan Walters' unit allowed 18.7 points and 100.2 rushing yards per game in 2025, 15th nationally in scoring defense and 11th against the run. Against Eastern Washington it gave up no passing touchdown and held the Eagles to one touchdown and three field goals, with two sacks and seven tackles for loss, but also 142 rushing yards and no interceptions. And Washington committed eight penalties for 101 yards, the first six of them on the defense. Jedd Fisch was blunt afterward. "That is not OK to have 100 yards in penalties." Jacob Manu said it the way a player would. "There's being aggressive (but) then we got to be disciplined. Those penalties will hurt us." The Huskies are averaging 8.7 penalties and 91.7 yards per game through three games.

Two of those flags landed on cornerbacks, pass interference on third-year corner Rahshawn Clark and true freshman Jeron Jones. That is the rebuilt corner room, and the penalties are most of what there is to judge it on so far. Eastern Washington never threw a touchdown, but a Big Ten quarterback will make Clark and Jones cover longer, and Saturday is the first real read on whether they can do it without grabbing.

So the thing to watch Saturday is whether the same disruption shows up without the free yardage. A 15-yard flag against a Big Ten offense extends drives that Eastern Washington could not extend on its own.

Minnesota at Washington, Saturday, 8 p.m. PT on FOX. The model gives Washington an 87% chance at home. That is the kind of number where the fun is in how it looks, not whether it happens. The stakes beyond the win are real but modest. Washington's playoff odds sit near 8% with a win and about 3% with a loss, and the Big Ten title game path moves from roughly 3% to under 1% the same way. More immediately, Washington is 3-0 and still outside the AP Top 25, sitting on 107 poll points, 10 behind No. 25 Houston, and a win over Minnesota would almost certainly put the Huskies back in.

One footnote for anyone reaching for history, there isn't any. These programs last met in 1977, when Minnesota won 19-17 in Minneapolis after Washington had taken the 1976 game 38-7 in Seattle. Forty-nine years later, whatever this rivalry becomes starts Saturday night.

Nothing else on the national board Saturday changes Washington's week. Watch the first six defensive snaps, count the yellow, and enjoy the rest.
