Washington State's rebuilt offensive line draws Arizona's run defense

WSU ran for 316 yards on Duquesne with a reshuffled line. Arizona allows 75.7 rushing yards a game, and Jack Stevens is 1 for 5 on field goals.

Kirby Moore benched left guard Kyle Martin, slid Jonny Lester inside to replace him and sent Jaylin Caldwell out at right tackle off the bench, and the front that resulted, Ashton Tripp, Lester, Noah Dunham, Nick Bakken, Caldwell, posted season-high blocking grades while Washington State converted 6 of 9 third downs in a 48-7 win over Duquesne. Maxwell Woods ran for 116 yards on 11 carries and Kirby Vorhees for 109 and two touchdowns on nine, the first time two Cougar backs topped 100 yards in a game since 2005. WSU ran for 316 yards as a team. Seven days earlier at Kansas State, Caden Pinnick had thrown for 65 yards, Vorhees had led the team with 45 rushing yards, Woods 29 on five, and the offense's longest play of the afternoon was a 16-yard Woods run.

That is the distance the Cougars covered in one week, and it is also why the week matters. Arizona visits Gesa Field on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Pacific on CBS, and the Wildcats arrive allowing 75.7 rushing yards per game. The same five linemen are starting again; Moore said after the Duquesne game he would not call the arrangement permanent, "we're gonna need all six of those guys", but the group that allowed no sacks stays intact for Arizona. Nobody needs 316 yards again. The question is whether Woods and Vorhees can get four or five yards on first down against a defense built to take exactly that away, because everything else about Washington State's offense this season has collapsed when it hasn't.

The receivers and the edge rush still have to show up

It was Moore's first win as a head coach, and it moved the Cougars to 1-2 against a Duquesne team that fell to 0-3. But it was an 0-3 FCS opponent, and Arizona will press two parts of this team that Duquesne never touched.

Start with the receivers. Branden Ganashamoorthy caught a 10-yard touchdown and newcomers Darrius Clemons and Daniel Blood added catches on out routes as Caden Pinnick completed 17 of 22 passes for 196 yards to seven different receivers against Duquesne. And the defense's best game came without its edge rushers doing much. Matyus McLain and Linus Zunk combined for three pressures, with Trent Bray leaning on safety and linebacker blitzes instead. Bray's attacking front is supposed to be the thing that makes this defense functional, and against a quarterback of Noah Fifita's quality, three pressures from the edges will not do.

The secondary news is unsettled, too. Cornerback Jalil Tucker, hurt in the opener, dressed but did not play against Duquesne, and Moore said the Arizona call will again come close to kickoff.

The kicker, and why it suddenly matters

Jack Stevens missed a 30-yard field goal and his first career extra point against Duquesne, and he is 1 for 5 on field goals this season. Moore is keeping him and framed it as a whole-operation problem, "We gotta look at the whole operation. There's snap, there's hold, there's protection." A 41-point margin made all of that invisible. Saturday will not. The model gives Washington State a 48% chance at home, which is another way of saying this is a game likely decided inside a touchdown, and a team that cannot make a 30-yarder is playing with a shorter field-goal range than its opponent.

The stakes, plainly

A win pushes WSU's Pac-12 title-game odds to about 37% and its playoff number to 1.8%; a loss leaves those at roughly 32% and 0.7%. Arizona is a nonconference opponent, so none of that runs through the standings directly; it moves because beating a Big 12 team says something about how good this roster actually is, and the simulations for Fresno State, Boise State and Texas State get re-read accordingly. The full picture is in the interactive guide, with the modeling explained in the methodology.

There are subplots. Safety Jshawn Frausto-Ramos and defensive lineman Eduwa Okundaye both came to Pullman from Arizona this offseason. Brent Brennan calls Bray "a really good friend of mine" and "Uncle Trent" to his kids, and says Bray's defense "is physical", a generous read on a coordinator who was fired as Oregon State's head coach after an 0-7 start last season and landed here in December as Moore's first staff hire. And Arizona is the first Power Four team to see the more than $10 million in donor-funded video board, audio and lighting work at Gesa Field targeted for completion in time for the start of the 2026 season.

None of that decides anything. The Cougars' first-down runs will.
