Brent Pry returns to the one opponent he never lost to, with a secondary that just got shredded

Virginia Tech is 3-0 and headed to Chestnut Hill, where Pry's defense has to be better than it was at Maryland and Grunkemeyer has to keep the ball away from BC.

Malik Washington completed 30 of 43 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns against Brent Pry's defense on Saturday, hit seven completions of 17-plus yards, converted a third-and-20 with a 43-yard throw, and watched Maryland score a touchdown on all four of its red-zone trips. Virginia Tech won anyway, 35-26 in College Park, because Ethan Grunkemeyer went 31 of 39 for 314 yards and three touchdowns to nine different receivers and added an 18-yard scramble for a fourth score. James Franklin summed up the defensive afternoon this way. "It didn't feel like we were able to get pressure on their quarterback, but we did win the sack battle."

That win ended Maryland's 20-game non-conference winning streak and pushed the Hokies to 3-0, their first 3-0 start since 2017 and already equal to their entire 2025 win total. It is the biggest thing this program has done in years. It also came with the defense as a passenger.

The man in the coordinator's headset

Pry is back at Virginia Tech in 2026 as Franklin's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, the same man who was the head coach here until he was fired in September 2025 after an 0-3 start. He said his 2026 install would be roughly 75 percent of what his defenses ran at Penn State, and for two weeks it looked like the fastest fix on the roster. Seven sacks and 14 tackles for loss against Old Dominion, with Franklin describing the Pry, Sean Spencer partnership as being "about being disruptive and getting people off schedule." Then it met a real passer and gave up 359 yards, with TechSideline noting apparent miscommunication between cornerback Jaquez White and safety Quentin Reddish on Chris Durr Jr.'s 12-yard touchdown.

Saturday at Boston College is his first ACC game since the dismissal, against the only opponent he never lost to. Pry went 3-0 against the Eagles as Virginia Tech's head coach, 27-10 in 2022, his first win as VT's head coach, 48-22 at Boston College in 2023, 42-21 in 2024. Kickoff is noon Eastern on ACC Network.

The thing to watch is narrow and specific, whether the corners and safeties play the same coverage on the same snap and whether anybody gets home on third down. Two blowouts of overmatched opponents told you what this unit can do with a lead and a clean pocket. Maryland told you what happens when it doesn't.

Grunkemeyer versus the takeaway defense

Boston College's defense ranks second nationally with six interceptions in three games. Grunkemeyer has thrown zero all season, across two 300-yard games, and Maryland, a defense with 10 sacks in its first two games, got to him exactly once. That is the game inside the game. If the Hokies have to outscore their own defense again, they have to do it without handing BC the one thing BC does well.

Luke Reynolds is the reason they can. The tight end caught all 12 of his targets at Maryland for 107 yards and a touchdown, including several third-down conversions and a fourth-down grab with 2:54 left that helped close it out. He is the first Hokie with back-to-back 100-yard receiving games since 2018, and on tight downs Grunkemeyer looks for him first.

Keep the left tackle upright and the flags in the pocket

Justin Terry went down late in the first quarter, was helped off and spent the second half on crutches. Virginia Tech allowed only one sack of Grunkemeyer, and no diagnosis has been reported, so Virginia Tech may open conference play with a backup protecting Grunkemeyer's blind side against a defense that hunts the ball.

The other nuisance is self-inflicted. Kyle Altuner had a false start, Montavious Cunningham drew an encroachment flag and Layth Ghannam was called for holding on an early drive, with TechSideline noting multiple holding penalties on the offense. Second-and-15 is how a passing team ends up throwing into an interception defense.

What a win is worth

The model has Virginia Tech at about 54 percent on the road here, which is closer to a coin flip than a 3-0 team's schedule usually feels. Win and it's 4-0 with a conference game banked and the first real ACC evidence that this rebuild travels.
