Brandon Tucker Jr. finished with 11 tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss in Austin, and UTSA's blitzes and line games pushed Arch Manning off his spot early enough that one hit, Darion White's tackle, knocked the quarterback's helmet loose. Texas held on 30-6, but UTSA's defense limited the Longhorns to 172 passing yards, a season low for them. Afterward Jeff Traylor said the defense and special teams played at "championship level."
That is a real thing to have done, and it is also not the whole tape. Texas backs ran for 228 yards at 4.8 a carry. UTSA's offense produced about 142 yards, converted 1 of 11 third downs and never reached the end zone; Owen McCown went 14-of-23 for 70 yards and threw an interception on the game's first snap. The only points came on two field goals, a 34-yarder and a 43-yarder. And the Roadrunners were flagged 12 times for 119 yards, against a Texas team that took eight for 88.
Saturday is where the excuse runs out
Colorado State comes to the Alamodome on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on ESPNU, and it closes a nonconference run, UTRGV at home, back-to-back road trips to Texas State and Texas, before the American schedule opens. Against Texas, the talent gap accounted for the 142 yards and the 1-for-11 third downs. Against a team UTSA opened as an 11.5-point favorite over, it won't.
The penalties are the part that has nothing to do with opponent quality. UTSA took 11 for 115 at Texas State two weeks before the 12 for 119 in Austin. That is the one flaw that has repeated in every setting, and it is the one that will travel to Rice, Tulane and UAB no matter who is on the other sideline. Watch the first three UTSA drives Saturday. If the offense is backing itself up with presnap fouls and holds again, the clean-pressure stuff from Austin was a nice night rather than a habit.
Traylor is 33-5 at the Alamodome, including 25-1 against conference opponents, which is exactly why this home date is a useful read and not a gimme lap. The home record has often covered for a team that beats itself; a comfortable, disciplined win here would mean the front finally paired its rush with its run fits, and that McCown, back for a final season after starting UTSA's last 27 games and throwing 30 touchdowns in 2025, has his offense scoring touchdowns instead of field goals.
What the game is worth
The model gives UTSA about an 81% chance, which matches the betting market's read. Win and UTSA's odds of reaching the American championship game sit near 14.9%; lose and they sit near 10.2%. That gap is modest because this is a nonconference game; it moves the league picture only through team strength, not standings. What matters is how UTSA looks doing it, a week before league play opens at Rice.
One more reason not to treat this as a walkover. UTSA needed a 74-yard McCown touchdown to Robert Henry Jr. with 4:49 left, and then a stopped two-point conversion, to beat Colorado State 17-16 in Fort Collins last year. Winning that way again would be entertaining. Winning without the drama would tell you more.
