Utah scored seven points after halftime and now goes to Ames

Utah's 33-0 shutout of Utah State was built almost entirely before halftime. Iowa State, where the Cyclones won late in 2024, asks for four quarters.

With 33 seconds left in the second quarter, Devon Dampier hit Braden Pegan for 37 yards and a touchdown, pushing Utah to 26-0 on Utah State. Then the scoring essentially stopped. Utah beat Utah State 33-0 on Sept. 19, and the entire second-half contribution was Daniel Bray's 63-yard run in the third quarter, seven points after halftime. Utah scored on its first four drives and piled up 301 first-half yards; the second-half playcalling, as the Deseret News described it, went more vanilla.

That is the tension Utah carries into Ames. The result itself was excellent and the personnel worries from August look smaller than they did. Dampier went 22 of 32 for 253 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, with Pegan, a former Utah State receiver, catching eight balls for 122 yards and both scores. The line allowed one sack and kept Dampier clean on 74% of his dropbacks, which is the strongest evidence yet that a rebuilt front can hold. The defense that lost All-America end John Henry Daley and two-year starting corner Smith Snowden to Michigan held Utah State to 188 yards and 58 on the ground, 2.3 per carry, with four sacks. Replacement players are producing. That question is mostly answered.

The questions that aren't answered are the ones Iowa State gets to ask. Alex Harrison's holding penalty erased a 95-yard Wayshawn Parker touchdown run, and Scalley said afterward there were "some ID things I think interiorly that we missed" in the run game. Scalley has earned credit for handing the offense to Kevin McGiven and the defense to Colton Swan. McGiven's first half included a flea flicker, a direct snap to Parker and designed runs for backup quarterback Byrd Ficklin, including Ficklin's touchdown run. But Scalley's own list of negatives keeps reading the same way. The list is penalties, an uncalled fake punt, a disjointed second half. Against three overmatched opponents at home, those cost nothing.

No. 15 Utah at Iowa State

Saturday, 1:30 p.m. MT on FOX, Utah's first road game of the season and its Big 12 opener. The model gives Utah a 68% chance to win. Utah also enters at No. 15 in the AP poll, up two spots and its season high, against an Iowa State team nobody is ranking.

If you want the specific reason to take the market seriously, it's the last meeting. On Nov. 23, 2024 in Salt Lake City, Iowa State beat Utah 31-28 on Carson Hansen's three-yard run with 1:31 left, set up by a halfback pass from Hansen to Gabe Burkle, and Cole Becker missed a 54-yarder at the end. The phase Utah lost in 2024 is the phase Utah hasn't had to play well this year.

The stakes are real. Win and Utah's playoff odds sit near 64% with a 78% shot at reaching the Big 12 title game; lose and those fall to roughly 38% and 40%. That's the whole week in one game. Utah's bye follows, so this result sits with the fanbase for two weeks either way.

What else is worth your Saturday

Sam Houston at Texas Tech: root for Sam Houston

This result carries a 5.8 percentage-point impact on Utah's playoff probability. A Sam Houston win is a long shot, so treat it as a bonus rather than something to count on.

10 a.m. MT on TNT. No. 11 Texas Tech is a 98.8% favorite, so Sam Houston's chance is about 1%. But it's the biggest number on the board. A Sam Houston win would put Utah's playoff odds at 62% rather than 56%, because removing an unbeaten Big 12 team from the national picture clears a competitor ahead of Utah. Texas Tech should win comfortably, so treat this as a bonus if you happen to see it, not a game to plan around.

Kansas State at Cincinnati: root for Cincinnati

This result carries a 4.9 percentage-point impact on Utah's conference-title-game probability.

5 p.m. MT on ESPN2. Cincinnati wins this 37% of the time, and a Cincinnati win would put Utah's Big 12 title-game odds at 69% rather than 64%. Straight standings math applies. Kansas State is a direct competitor for the two title-game spots, and Utah visits Cincinnati in Week 9 anyway.

UNLV at Akron: root for Akron

This result carries a 2.6 percentage-point impact on Utah's playoff probability. An Akron win is a long shot, so treat it as a bonus rather than something to count on.

10 a.m. MT on ESPN+. Akron is a 6% home underdog, so the Zips almost certainly lose and this is an optional check-in. A UNLV loss nudges Utah's playoff number to 58.6% instead of 56%, thinning the field of non-Big 12 teams in the at-large conversation. Worth a glance at the scorebug, nothing more.

Oklahoma State at West Virginia: root for West Virginia

This result carries a 2.0 percentage-point impact on Utah's playoff probability.

5 p.m. MT on FS1. West Virginia is a 79% favorite, and the likely result is the helpful one. Another Big 12 loss for Oklahoma State moves Utah's playoff odds to 56.5% rather than 54.6%. Small, and probably already happening.
