Troy's defense held Missouri to 224 total yards Saturday and allowed only a 36-yard Blake Craig field goal after halftime. Missouri won 27-17. The 24-point second quarter that decided it came on DaMarion Fowlkes' 68-yard punt-return touchdown, Sione Laulea's interception of Goose Crowder at the Troy 46, and Langden Kitchen's strip-sack two possessions later, Missouri turned the two takeaways into 14 points and never needed a sustained drive.
That is the strangest kind of loss for this particular team. The 2025 Troy defense recorded 37 sacks and five defensive touchdowns, the third-most defensive scores in the country. Bandit Donnie Smith is back after leading the Sun Belt with 11 sacks; safety Justin Powe is back after finishing third on the team with 76 tackles, and Parker said at Sun Belt Media Days that Powe was healthy following offseason shoulder surgery. Dontae Wright still runs the defense. The unit produced 13 tackles for loss and four sacks in the opener. At Missouri it smothered an offense and generated nothing.
So the question in Logan on Saturday is narrow and answerable. Does the pressure turn back into the ball?
Utah State is the opponent you want for that
The Aggies are 0-3 and coming off a 33-0 shutout at the hands of No. 17 Utah; Utah led 26-0 at halftime. Their quarterback job is open. Grady Brosterhous started against Utah, which Mendenhall said was his choice based on how Brosterhous played the previous week against Washington, saying, "That was inspiring, so it's just like, how could we not?" Mendenhall also noted that Hillstead "is now becoming back and available" without naming a starter for this week. Utah State also ranks near the bottom nationally in offensive success rate and dead last nationally in scrimmage plays of at least 20 yards, per an Action Network look at the matchup. An unsettled passer who cannot push the ball downfield is exactly the quarterback Smith and the edge rushers are supposed to eat.
One complication on the other side of the ball is that Utah State linebacker Harrison Taggart left the Utah game by ambulance in the second quarter after a collision and was taken off on a spine board, with the team saying they were "concerned." Mendenhall called him "the heartbeat of our program." Troy fans should want to win this game, not benefit from that.
The reason the defense may have to carry it
Two weeks ago against Alabama State, Troy ran for 226 yards, with Jaheim Merriweather gaining 127 and scoring all three rushing touchdowns. At Missouri the same offense gained 93 rushing yards and allowed three sacks. Crowder threw for 230 yards and two long touchdowns, to TK Keyes for 76 and Howard Kinchen for 55, so Adam Austin's vertical element is real. The downhill run game that was supposed to be the foundation disappeared against better bodies, and Troy converted 1 of 7 third downs after halftime and did not score again.
That matters at Utah State because Troy also entered this week ranked 119th nationally in both rushing and passing success rate. Two offenses that struggle to stay on schedule, at roughly 4,500 feet, in Troy's second straight true road game. The market sees it the same way. Utah State is about a 3.5-point home favorite with a total of 47.5, and the model gives Troy a 48.6% chance. This is a coin flip against a winless team, and the way Troy avoids a long night is by getting short fields instead of earning every one of them.
Watch Crowder's pocket. He has been cleared healthy after missing six games with a 2025 Week 3 injury, but he absorbed the strip-sack fumble at Missouri and an earlier Daeden Hopkins sack-and-strip that Troy recovered. Behind this line, on the road, his exposure is the real durability question, not the box score.
One quieter encouragement is that Troy was flagged six times for 60 yards at Missouri, half the 12-for-120 total against Alabama State that led Parker to call his own team undisciplined and put the responsibility on himself. A hostile field at altitude is where that correction either holds or doesn't.
The nonconference game before the title defense
This is a nonconference game that means little in the standings, and Troy's Sun Belt title defense doesn't start until the Oct. 6 opener at Southern Miss, with a bye in between. Winning in Logan moves Troy's chance of reaching the Sun Belt championship game from 16.8% to 19.6%. Three points of conference-title odds is not what Troy is driving to Utah for.
The real stake is what the team looks like walking into league play. Troy led Missouri 10-0, outgained a ranked opponent 323-224, and lost. Doing that again in Logan against an 0-3 team would tell Sun Belt West rivals everything they want to know. Sacks, a takeaway, a run game that moves someone, and a second half with points in it are the Saturday worth wanting.
Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. Central on CBS Sports Network. The interactive guide has the full picture, and the methodology explains where the numbers come from.
