Ohio's quarterback room has three answers and no starter

Vezza started and Davis finished at South Alabama with Poulos out again. Stonehill week is Ohio's last chance to settle the job before MAC play.

Matt Vezza started at South Alabama in place of the absent Nick Poulos and went 12-of-16 for 113 yards with two touchdown passes to Riley Neer and an interception. Then, with Ohio down 38-21 in the fourth quarter, true freshman Levi Davis came in and threw two more touchdowns, a 10-yarder to AJ Miller and a 21-yarder to Dom Dorwart, in a 41-36 road loss that dropped the Bobcats to 1-2. Nobody reported Vezza hurt. The Post said Davis entered to get some experience and finish the game.

So Ohio hosts Stonehill on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN+ with a quarterback room that has produced four touchdown passes from two players in one afternoon and still has no announced starter. Poulos, who took the hit against Jacksonville State that started all this, remained out as of Ohio's week-four press conference, with no timetable and no confirmation for Stonehill. He is the one who built the passing game's only reliable connection in the opener, hitting Neer six times for 104 yards and a touchdown against Nebraska, so his return would not be a formality. It would be the return of a starter with real chemistry to a room that has since found other ways to move the ball. Vezza arrived from New Hampshire off a 2,673-yard, 19-touchdown passing season with 601 rushing yards, which is to say Ohio did not recruit him to hold a clipboard.

What fans should want Saturday is clarity, and the kind that comes early rather than in the fourth quarter. Hauser said this week that Ohio cannot underestimate an FCS opponent, pointed to the Nebraska start as the model and added, "We've started slow the last two weeks as a team. We've got to start fast." He has reason to say it. At South Alabama the Bobcats trailed 24-7 at halftime before Darren James-Hamilton's 56-yard kickoff return sparked a rally that got it to 24-21 and still fell short. Against Stonehill, the model gives Ohio a 97% chance to win, so the scoreboard is not the point. Whether one quarterback takes enough meaningful snaps to be the obvious choice at Kent State next week is.

The rest of the offense has been the stable part. With Duncan Brune out, senior Victor Rosa started and ran 13 times for 78 yards with a 33-yard touchdown as Ohio averaged 5.5 yards a carry. The run game has now survived a quarterback carousel and a missing starting back, which is the strongest argument that whoever plays quarterback will have help.

The defense is where the margin disappears. Kurt Mattix took over as coordinator after coaching Ohio's defensive ends in 2024 and spending 2025 as Charlotte's co-defensive coordinator, and three games in, his unit gave up 266 rushing yards and 41 points at South Alabama without a sack. Stonehill will not test that. Kent State, Central Michigan and Toledo will. A clean, boring afternoon in Athens is worth more than it sounds like.

Central Michigan at Miami: root for Miami

No. 6 Miami hosts Central Michigan at 6:30 p.m. Eastern on The CW Network, and Miami is a 98% favorite. Central Michigan visits Peden Stadium in Week 6, so how the Chippewas handle a ranked defense is an early look at the team Ohio has to beat in Athens, and Ohio's MAC title-game odds sit at 18.8% if Miami wins, versus 15.6% if Central Michigan pulls the upset, a swing of 3.2 percentage points. None of that changes what Saturday is actually about in Athens, which is who takes the first snap at quarterback.
