Northwestern's 41 points came with an asterisk and Indiana won't hand over any

Bloomington asks for offense earned the hard way, with the offensive line unsettled and Chiles facing Indiana a third time.

Guard Ezomo Oratokhai went down in the first quarter against Colorado and was carted off, and Aidan Chiles spent the rest of a rainy Saturday throwing three touchdown passes to Joseph Himon II and running for two more in a 41-7 Northwestern win. Center Jackson Carsello played a limited snap count behind him, rotating with Anthony Birsa. The scoreboard read like a statement. The drive chart read like an opportunity list. Roughly 31 of Northwestern's 41 points followed Colorado giveaways and failed fourth downs, and the Wildcats gained 5.8 yards per play, well down from the 497-yard opener, converting 5 of 13 third downs.

Both things are true, and Friday night in Bloomington is where they get separated.

What Kelly has actually built

Chip Kelly's offense at Northwestern does not look like Chip Kelly's offense anywhere else. The up-tempo pace he ran at Oregon and UCLA has not been as prominent here, with Kelly tailoring the approach to this roster's strengths. Northwestern held the ball 36:53, scored on 7 of 11 drives and has 75 points through two games, its highest-scoring start since 2013. That is a ball-control offense wearing a famous name, and it has worked.

What it has not yet done is manufacture points against a defense that keeps the ball. If Northwestern is going to score Friday, it has to go 75 yards with third-and-6 in the way, and 5-of-13 on third down against Colorado is the number that says that is still unproven.

Chiles gets a third try at this specific problem

Chiles started Michigan State's first eight games in 2025, completed 63 percent for 1,392 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions and added six rushing scores before an injury ended his season, the résumé that made him worth trusting as a transfer. It also includes two losses to Indiana, 47-10 in November 2024 and 38-13 in October 2025. In that second one he completed 27 of 33 passes for 243 yards and still lost by 25, which is the whole warning. You can play clean against Indiana and get beaten anyway if the offense never gets a short field.

He is playing better now than he did in either of those games, and he is playing behind the least settled group on his new team. Oratokhai's diagnosis and timeline have not been reported, and David Braun said he had no update afterward. Braun has also said Northwestern will keep injury information in-house until Big Ten play begins, so fans head into Friday genuinely unsure who lines up at center and at guard. Everything Kelly can call depends on that answer.

Where the game can turn ugly

The defense allowed seven points and forced four turnovers, and it also let Colorado run 33 times for 180 yards at 5.5 a carry. Colorado's only touchdown was a 50-yard screen after Caleb Komolafe's fumble. Indiana does not need trick plays to exploit a run defense giving up five and a half a pop; it needs a lead and a clock, and it will have both if the early downs go badly.

The cheapest insurance is field position, and that part improved. Nikola Dugandzic averaged 44.3 yards on three punts. Three punts is nothing as a sample. Friday he may punt seven or eight times, and every one of those is a chance to keep Indiana starting on its own 20 instead of at midfield.

What to actually want out of Friday

Northwestern is a 21-point underdog at FanDuel, and the model gives it a 3.9 percent chance to win. Those numbers agree with each other. Treat a win as a gift, not a plan.

The realistic prize is evidence. Northwestern was picked 14th in an 18-team Big Ten before the season, and a 2-0 start against South Dakota State and Colorado does not move that much. A team that drives the length of the field twice in Bloomington, holds the ball, punts well and loses by 10 tells you more about October than the Colorado box score did. That matters immediately. The new Ryan Field opens October 2 against Penn State, a game the simulations give Northwestern a 22 percent chance to win. Whatever the offense learns Friday, it uses a week later in front of a full house.

Braun signed an extension through 2031 on September 17, two days before the Colorado game, so nothing about Friday is a referendum on the staff. It is just the first honest look at a team that has spent two weeks being handed things.

Kickoff is Friday at 7 p.m. CT on FOX. The full picture is at the interactive guide, and the modeling is explained at methodology.
