The Bison built 28-0 in 19 minutes and then went quiet

NDSU is idle before Wyoming visits Oct. 3, so the week's outside business is Wyoming and Old Dominion, and the second-half question Polasek and Hayes raised themselves.

Jackson Williams caught a 33-yard touchdown from Nathan Hayes on the opening drive at Sacramento State, Darius Givance scooped a loose ball and ran it back 24 yards with 11:49 left in the first quarter, Myles Mitchell scored from 9 yards out as the quarter expired, and DJ Scott broke a 42-yard run early in the second. Nineteen minutes, 28-0, and NDSU had outgained the Hornets 194-27 in the first quarter. North Dakota State won 31-10 on the road. Then the offense basically stopped, managing 97 yards on four second-half drives and a Drew Klein field goal, with Sacramento State getting the only touchdown after halftime.

Hayes finished 14 of 24 for 210 yards and a touchdown with no interception, and Williams set a career high with 7 catches for 134 yards, but 151 of Hayes' passing yards came in the first quarter, leaving 59 for everything after it. The Bison said as much themselves. Hayes said the offense "hasn't played our best in the second half," crediting the defense for picking it up, and Tim Polasek said the team has "to make our mind up that we want to be a great finishing team." When a quarterback and a head coach name the same problem unprompted, fans do not have to invent it.

Worth keeping proportion. Polasek is 26-3 at NDSU with two MVFC titles and the 2024 FCS championship, and both coordinators, Dan Larson on offense, Grant Olson on defense, are running the same systems they ran a year ago. Nothing about the fade points to a staff learning new material on the fly; it points to execution over 60 minutes against opponents who will not be down 28 by the second quarter. The bye is well-timed for exactly that.

The defense reads the same way. Three takeaways, a touchdown off one of them, and Sacramento State held to three points through three quarters. But the Hornets still gained 328 yards. That is a unit winning with turnovers rather than pressure, which works beautifully in a game like this one and gets harder to count on weekly.

The one piece of genuine depth news came up front. Josh Magin rotated in with Noah Stommes, and Polasek said the substitutions were planned to get both linemen repetitions before the first-choice five started the second half. That is the point of the 29 high-school signees and nine transfers NDSU brought in, a class that included offensive line help along with defensive ends, corners and a linebacker. They are not headline starters in September, but bodies who can hold up across a Mountain West season. Watch whether that rotation looks like a plan or a patch when Wyoming comes to Fargo on Oct. 3, a game the model gives NDSU about a 91% chance to win.

Two games elsewhere actually move NDSU's numbers this weekend.

Hawai'i at Wyoming: root for Wyoming

Hawai'i is a Mountain West opponent NDSU has to climb over in the standings, and a loss here dents the Rainbow Warriors directly. Wyoming wins about 39% of the time, and the two branches split NDSU's conference title-game odds cleanly, with roughly 70.5% if Wyoming holds serve at home, about 68.1% if Hawai'i wins, a gap of 2.4 percentage points. It airs on The CW Network. As a bonus, you get a long look at the team walking into the Fargodome next week.

James Madison at Old Dominion: root for Old Dominion

This one is about national competition, not the league. James Madison is the kind of team whose unbeaten résumé crowds NDSU out of the playoff picture; knocking it off thins the field. Old Dominion is a heavy home underdog at about 10%, and the payoff is modest, roughly 5.0% playoff odds for NDSU if the Monarchs pull it off against about 3.6% if they do not, a 1.4-point swing. The Monarchs are on ESPN+, and the Bison will need this kind of outside help more than once this fall. Every unbeaten team that loses is one fewer résumé sitting ahead of NDSU when the committee starts sorting.
