Gagliano has never seen Jacksonville State, and Jacksonville State has never lost to Middle Tennessee

Middle Tennessee upset Nevada 27-20 behind Antonio Martin and a turnover-free Roman Gagliano. Now comes the CUSA opener at the team that has swept the series.

Antonio Martin got the inches on fourth down, then got the last three yards with 5:59 left, and Middle Tennessee had the lead it never gave back in a 27-20 win over Nevada. The touchdown came after Nevada's possession fell apart on a holding penalty and an unsportsmanlike-conduct flag and Herschel Turner lost a fumble that Middle Tennessee recovered at the Nevada 21 with 8:02 remaining. Dominic Bourgeois had tied the game at 20 with 9:51 left. Two scores in under four minutes, and Middle Tennessee held on.

The rest of the box score matters this week too. Nevada turned it over three times in the second half, Jackson Lowe's strip-sack on the first play after halftime, a Jason Hardy interception, and Turner's fumble, and Middle Tennessee turned it over zero times. Roman Gagliano went 16 of 29 for 173 yards and two touchdowns without a giveaway. Martin ran for 104 yards and the team finished with 157 on the ground.

The win came with caveats. Fourteen of the 27 points came on fields Nevada shortened with giveaways, and Gagliano's 173 yards on 29 attempts is efficient scoring rather than a passing game that took a defense apart. The bounce-back from the Marshall interception is genuine; the question of whether he sustains it is still open.

Why this opponent, right now

Saturday at 6 p.m. Central on ESPN+, Middle Tennessee opens Conference USA play at Jacksonville State, and Gagliano has never taken a snap in this matchup. Nick Vattiato started the 2025 meeting and went 23 of 45 for 235 yards; it took Vattiato's Nov. 8 injury against Florida International to put Gagliano into his first career start a week later against Western Kentucky. So the quarterback whose late-2025 emergence, 911 yards and two wins in three starts, is the main internal reason anyone expected this offense to look better has simply never been measured against the one league opponent that keeps beating the Blue Raiders.

That sweep is complete. Jacksonville State has won all three meetings since starting its FBS transition, winning 45-30 in 2023, 42-20 in 2024 and 24-21 last October. The last one hurt differently. Middle Tennessee led 14-7 entering the fourth quarter and got outscored 17-7 from there, the fourth straight one-possession Conference USA loss in a stretch that ended bowl hopes. Closing out a tight fourth quarter is exactly what this team just did to Nevada, and exactly what it could not do against this opponent a year ago.

What to watch

Middle Tennessee's offense is working with almost an entirely new set of position coaches. Derek Mason didn't just swap coordinators after back-to-back three-win seasons; he replaced Bodie Reeder with Anthony Scelfo and installed new offensive line, running backs and tight ends coaches. Year 3 of a five-year contract with a broadly rebuilt offensive staff makes the 157 rushing yards against Nevada the clearest sign yet that the rebuilt run game is taking hold, and Jacksonville State is the first league defense to test it.

So the plan is Martin carrying early and often rather than Gagliano throwing 29 times to get 173 yards. Another clean sheet on turnovers, since the Nevada margin came from takeaways and this team will not get that gift every week. And a fourth quarter with the game still close, because that is where this series has been decided.

The model gives Middle Tennessee about a 24% chance in Jacksonville, so a win in Jacksonville would be an upset for the second time in three weeks. The reward is real, though. Middle Tennessee's Conference USA title-game chances sit near 20% in simulations where it wins Saturday and near 3% in the ones where it loses. A team with a home win over Nevada already banked gets to find out this week whether the last three Octobers still mean anything.
