LSU hosts the team that set a Tiger Stadium scoring record on it

Texas A&M scored 49 in Baton Rouge last October. LSU returns home 0-1 in the SEC, without Spears for the year and without Trey'Dez Green, needing points before halftime.

Marcel Reed accounted for four touchdowns and KC Concepcion returned a punt 79 yards in Tiger Stadium last October, and Texas A&M walked out with 49 points, the most the Aggies have ever scored in that building, breaking a mark that had stood since 1975. LSU had led 18-14. It lost 49-25. A&M comes back to Baton Rouge on Saturday, and LSU arrives from a 32-24 loss at Ole Miss in which its offense scored seven points and gained 117 yards before halftime. Sam Leavitt was 9-of-14 for 51 yards in those two quarters. Charlie Weis Jr.'s answer after the break was quicker throws and simpler reads to the outside, per observers rather than anyone on LSU's staff, and Leavitt more than doubled his passing yardage. The Tigers tied it at 24 early in the fourth quarter.

Then it went wrong in the places that decide games. Ole Miss drove 75 yards in 13 plays for the go-ahead score, and LSU jumped offside twice on the two-point try. LSU's last possession got to the Ole Miss 6, where Leavitt missed an open Zach Grace on third down and had his fourth-down throw deflect off a defensive lineman's helmet and get intercepted in the end zone. Kiffin was blunt about the standings afterward. "Now we're 0-1 in SEC play... there's a lot of football left. Go back home next week and get a win."

So the thing to watch Saturday is not whether LSU can rally. It proved that in Oxford. It is whether the first quarter looks like the third. LSU has won 25 of its last 27 night games at Tiger Stadium, and this game is its fourth consecutive night game to open the 2026 season. A 17-point hole is survivable against Ole Miss on the road with 30 minutes left; it is a different problem against a Texas A&M team Kiffin warned his players "won't" look like it did in a 31-21 home loss to Kentucky.

The personnel LSU does not have

Two absences change what you should expect. TigerRag reported that defensive back Dashawn Spears is out for the season with a torn ACL in his left knee suffered against Ole Miss; Kiffin called him "an integral part of how well we've played on defense" and "a really tough loss for us." Sophomore CJ Jimcoily took his snaps at the star position in-game, with redshirt freshman Jhase Thomas also in consideration. That is the spot to watch early, because Ole Miss's Trinidad Chambliss completed all eight of his first-half third-down throws and Kiffin admitted LSU played "pretty conservative on him early."

On offense, tight end Trey'Dez Green, LSU's leading receiver with 222 yards on 14 catches, will sit this one out and possibly one or two more. The tight end LSU spent the summer fighting to add, Dae'Quan Wright, is not an option and never will be this season. An NFL memo now bars both Wright and Zxavian Harris from signing with any club in 2026 after their brief return to college, and LSU's roster was already locked without them. Mike Elko needled LSU about that saga. The dispute is closed; the production gap at tight end is not.

Texas A&M at LSU: 7:30 p.m. ET, ABC

No. 10 LSU hosts No. 23 Texas A&M as a modest favorite; the model gives the Tigers a 56% chance. The swing is the largest on the board by a wide margin. Win and LSU's playoff odds sit near 35%; lose and they fall to about 20%, with a second conference loss in September. Kiffin, for what it is worth, went 3-0 against A&M at Ole Miss and said he missed the series. "That was a good series for us." He gets it back from the other sideline.

The rest of the board

Illinois at Ohio State: root for Illinois

An upset here is worth about 2.9 percentage points of playoff odds to LSU, the biggest outside number of the week, because Ohio State is a direct competitor for at-large spots and a one-loss Buckeyes team is easier to pass. It will not happen often. Illinois wins roughly 5% of the time. Noon ET on FOX. Enjoy it if it develops; do not plan around it.

Kennesaw State at Arkansas State: root for Arkansas State

Worth about 1.6 points to LSU's playoff number, and Arkansas State is favored at 66%. Arkansas State winning props up the strength of a schedule LSU's résumé brushes against. 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

Missouri at Mississippi State: root for Mississippi State

The one with real conference teeth. Missouri is an SEC rival for the same standings slots and championship-game path LSU needs, so a No. 19 Missouri loss at No. 24 Mississippi State is worth about 1.3 points to LSU. Mississippi State wins it 57% of the time. 7:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network, in progress while LSU plays, which is the right order of attention anyway.
