Lunch Winfield carried 19 times for 91 yards and ran in touchdowns of 9 and 11 yards, Steven Blanco punched in a 1-yard score to cap the opening drive, and that was every point Louisiana scored in a 21-14 win over UAB on Saturday. Winfield went 15 of 20 for 110 yards with no touchdown pass. Louisiana put nothing on the board after halftime, and Michael Desormeaux said afterward, "We were not in sync in the second half and that's up front. That's where it starts."
The defense is why that still ended as a win. Louisiana held UAB to 218 total yards, sacked the quarterback three times, intercepted him once, and stopped UAB on all four of its fourth-down tries. UAB converted 2 of 12 third downs. When a team goes 0-for-4 on fourth down and 2-for-12 on third, 21 first-half points are enough, but Louisiana also lost two of three fumbles, and Darrell Smith's second-quarter fumble came back 13 yards for a UAB touchdown. A 7.5-point favorite at home won by seven.
Saturday: Louisiana at Charlotte, 5:30 p.m. CT, ESPN+
Louisiana is only on this trip because the Sept. 26 home date with Louisiana Tech went away when the Bulldogs announced they were joining the Sun Belt. Charlotte, having cancelled a Louisville trip and moved its Ole Miss home game to Oxford, had an open Saturday and called. The 49ers are 0-3, beaten by The Citadel, Ole Miss and App State, and they rushed for 36 net yards on 25 carries in Boone last week. The model gives Louisiana about a 69% chance to win; sportsbooks have the Cajuns somewhere between 10.5 and 14.5 points depending on the book.
So the scoreboard is not really the question. The question is whether the offense that disappeared after halftime was short on healthy receivers or short on answers.
Sampson is the variable
Shelton Sampson Jr. returns to Louisiana in 2026 and made the Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team. He has not played in two games, and RotoWire reported he was targeting a return at Charlotte, dependent on his knee. Trenton Chaney was pointed the same direction. Against UAB, Landon Strother led the receivers with five catches for 41 yards on his own return from injury, and nobody caught a pass longer than 29 yards.
That is the whole case for patience with Winfield's passing line. Fifteen completions for 110 yards is what an offense looks like throwing to its third and fourth options. If Sampson plays and the ball still travels five yards at a time in the third quarter, the problem is the scheme and the line, not the injury report. If Sampson plays and Louisiana scores after halftime for the first time since the USC game, the last two Saturdays look like an availability story that resolved itself.
The backfield stays unsettled either way. Smith was supposed to be back at full strength for UAB; instead he took eight carries for 14 yards, fewest of Louisiana's four backs, lost the fumble that produced UAB's touchdown, and a Yahoo Sports preview says Louisiana could be without him at Charlotte. Blanco (11 carries, 55 yards) and Anthony Reagan Jr. (8 for 48) already absorbed the bigger share. Watching who gets the early-down work tells you how the staff has sorted that out.
Why a comfortable win still counts for something
Louisiana went 6-7, 6-7, 10-4 and 6-7 in Desormeaux's four seasons. The 2024 Sun Belt Championship Game run sits alone in the middle of three losing records, and 6-7 teams are exactly the ones that arrive at an 0-3 opponent's stadium a week before conference play and find a way to make it close. Winning by seven over UAB as a touchdown-plus favorite was not disqualifying. Doing it again in Charlotte would be.
Arkansas State opens Sun Belt play in Lafayette next week, and the model puts Louisiana's odds of reaching the conference title game around 30% with a win here against 26% with a loss, a nonconference game nudging conference math only through what it says about how good this team actually is. Root for a game decided by halftime, with Winfield handing off in the fourth quarter instead of running for his life in the third.
