Caleb Nix caught a 37-yard Alex Smith punt at the Jacksonville State 25 with 8:16 left, declined to fair-catch it as three Georgia Southern defenders ran past him, and went 75 yards for the touchdown that put the Gamecocks ahead for good. Georgia Southern lost 31-27 after leading 24-10 at halftime, outscored 21-3 after the break. Nix's own description of the play, "I kind of thought I was going to get killed, because all the white jerseys were right there. And then, somehow when I caught it, they just kind of all passed," is the part that will sting in Statesboro, because the coverage lane simply evaporated. Clay Helton, asked about it, said he didn't "know if the guys felt that there was a fair catch or not."
Here is the strange thing. That was the best the rebuilt offense has looked. Georgia Southern ran 39 times for 182 yards and three touchdowns, David Mbadinga carrying 18 times for 103, while allowing Max Johnson to be sacked once. Against Clemson a week earlier, the same unit gave up three sacks and went 4-of-17 on third down. The fixes were real. They lasted two quarters. Georgia Southern's only points after halftime were a 43-yard Tripp Bryant field goal.
The defense didn't hold up its end either. Jacksonville State scored its 24 offensive points on drives of 75, 75, 75 and 53 yards at 6.2 yards a play. Mike Mutz took this job describing a 3-4 front that slides to nickel against spread teams, built around stopping the run and taking the ball away. The run defense mostly cooperated, 108 rushing yards, and Brandon Tyson recovered a forced fumble that became a touchdown. That was the only takeaway, and the Eagles did not sack the Jacksonville State quarterback, so the half of Mutz's plan that is supposed to end drives never showed up while the lead was there to protect.
No. 25 Houston at Paulson, 4 p.m. Saturday on ESPNU
The Eagles are 1-2 with Houston as the last nonconference game before Sun Belt play opens at Coastal Carolina. Houston will be the first power-conference team ever to play a game at Paulson Stadium. Across the field, Willie Fritz coached Georgia Southern in 2014-15, went 17-7 and won Sun Belt Coach of the Year in 2014.
The model gives Georgia Southern a 40% chance, which is generous by the standards of a ranked visitor and reflects a real path. Houston's run defense allows a Big 12-best 62.7 yards per game; its pass defense ranks second-to-last in the league at 253 allowed. Georgia Southern threw for 244 against Clemson. So the week that the ground game finally worked is the week the ground game is the wrong answer, and the receiver best equipped to punish that secondary may not dress. Ashton Hollins, the team's leading receiver, left Jacksonville State in the fourth quarter with a left shoulder injury and had an MRI scheduled for Monday, with his status still open as of midweek.
Watch the first drive after halftime. That, more than the final score, is what tells you whether the fix from Jacksonville State was one good half or something Georgia Southern can carry into October.
James Madison at Old Dominion: root for Old Dominion
Kickoff is 6 p.m. Saturday on ESPN+. James Madison is the Sun Belt East team standing between Georgia Southern and anything resembling a division race, and the Eagles host the Dukes in Week 6. An Old Dominion win puts Georgia Southern's title-game odds at 4.6%; a James Madison win puts them at 2.5%. That is a 2.1-percentage-point swing in a number that is small either way, and Old Dominion is only a 10% shot at home. File it under pleasant surprise rather than a result worth arranging your Saturday around.
