Fresno State's takeaway machine meets an offense that won't throw

Rice's triple option asks Fresno State's rebuilt secondary to win a completely different way Saturday night.

Ethan Tierney caught Luke Weaver's throw in the end zone with 16 seconds left in the first half, when Fresno State led 6-3, and then picked Weaver off again in the third quarter and ran it 38 yards into San José State territory. Kiontre Harris and Simeon Harris each took one more on consecutive Spartan possessions in the fourth. Four Weaver interceptions, five Fresno State sacks, zero Fresno State turnovers. That is how a 26-10 road win happened.

The night was less lopsided than the box score. San José State trailed only 16-10 late before Fresno State scored the final 13 points, so the margin reads more comfortable than the game felt. And the same secondary that made all four takeaways let Anthony Ivey catch seven passes for 150 yards, including a 46-yarder, while Weaver still threw for 244. The picks came; the routine coverage snaps between them did not.

Rice asks the opposite question

Fresno State hosts Rice on Saturday at 7 p.m. Pacific on The CW Network, and the Owls run a triple option that will not hand anybody an interception. Matt Entz has already flagged it as a different animal. "The triple option is a little more assignment driven. We have to be great with the eyes," he said, noting that Rice's quarterback already has more than 50 carries this season.

Watch the perimeter on first down. If Fresno State's corners and safeties are arriving late to the pitch man and Rice is grinding out seven-play, five-yard-a-crack drives, that is the thing to note, even inside a win.

The stakes here are mostly internal. The model gives Fresno State a 95% chance to win at home, and a win nudges the Bulldogs' playoff number to 5% against 1% if they lose, small either way, with the conference-title picture moving from roughly 53% to 46% on the same branch. Nobody needs convincing that Fresno State should beat Rice. The question is what condition the defense is in when it gets there.

Why this matters more than a 95% favorite usually does

Two things make the tune-up worth real attention. First, this is the last game before Fresno State's first Pac-12 contest in program history, at Washington State. The league move is the season's defining change, and whatever defensive standard the Bulldogs set Saturday is the one they carry into it. Second, the secondary Fresno State is asking to do this is not the one it planned on. Three 2025 starters graduated, safety Camryn Bracha and cornerbacks Al'zillion Hamilton and Jakari Embry, and then Entz confirmed before the Sacramento State game that Ryan Wilson's lower-leg injury would end his season. The 2025 defense ranked 10th nationally in total defense at 285.7 yards allowed per game; this version is still auditioning for that description.

There is a quarterback wrinkle too. Fresno State converted 5 of 16 third downs against San José State. Entz is not changing quarterbacks, and he said why. "If you're plus one in turnover margin, it's like 70 percent chance to win." That standard works beautifully when the defense is handing over four picks a night. Against an offense built to protect the football, Fresno State's offense may have to earn the points itself.

Liberty at Coastal Carolina: root for Coastal Carolina

Thursday, 4:30 p.m. Pacific on ESPN. Liberty is simply another Group of Five team chasing the same at-large playoff slot, so a Liberty loss helps the Bulldogs. A Coastal Carolina win puts Fresno State's playoff number at 6.2% instead of 4.7%, worth about 1.6 percentage points.

Root for it, but do not plan your Thursday around it. Coastal Carolina is a home underdog at roughly 11%. It is a nice thing to stumble into, not a result to lean on.
