Mitch Griffis started at Old Dominion, and late in the first quarter he came off the field. Emory Williams replaced him and played his most snaps of the season, and ECU's first touchdown came on a 25-yard double pass with Williams throwing to a receiver who threw to Ja'Keith Hamilton. Griffis came back late in the second quarter, stayed in the rest of the way, and hit Dillon Lorick for a 27-yard third-down conversion on the go-ahead field-goal drive in a 20-17 win. Nobody at ECU has said why he came out.
That matters because the week before, against App State, Griffis had taken all 37 ECU pass attempts. That looked like the end of a competition that opened when Katin Houser transferred to Illinois after starting all 12 regular-season games in 2025 and throwing for 3,300 yards. Instead of settling, the job reopened.
So the Pirates host North Carolina Central on Saturday at 4 p.m. on ESPN+ as a 98% home favorite, and the interesting part of the afternoon is not whether they win. It is whether one quarterback plays the whole thing.
What a clean game would actually look like
ECU is 1-2 after winning 20-17 at Old Dominion, a win in which 17 of ECU's 20 points came directly off Old Dominion turnovers. Jordan Davis' offense has not yet produced a game it generated by itself. It hit 417 yards and 22 first downs against App State, with Griffis finding Jason Dickerson for a 61-yard touchdown, but converted only 2 of 12 third downs and turned it over twice. At Old Dominion ECU ran 47 times for 173 yards and completed 11 of 21 passes for 103 yards.
Against an NC Central defense that just got outgained 445-218 at Gardner-Webb, sustained drives are available. Watch third down and watch the snap count at quarterback. A day where Griffis plays four quarters and ECU scores on long drives instead of short fields would be the first real answer the staff has given.
The defense gets a different kind of quarterback
Ayden Duncanson's game-tying 67-yard interception return off a third-and-18 throw, on the first drive of the second half, was the swing at Old Dominion, and the Monarchs never scored again. That is the kind of outcome Jordon Hankins built his reputation on, his 2025 Memphis defense finished in the FBS top 50 in red-zone defense, interceptions, rushing defense, turnovers gained, defensive touchdowns and fourth-down defense.
NC Central quarterback Nelson Layne was named MEAC Rookie of the Week after the Eagles' opener, and he is the player ECU's front seven has to account for when he pulls the ball down and runs. He also threw 10 of 15 for 150 yards with an interception in the loss at Gardner-Webb, so this is still not the pass-heavy test ECU's defense has yet to face.
The stakes, honestly
This is only the second meeting ever between the programs, ECU won the first 52-7 in Greenville in 2014, and it is a Family Weekend afternoon in Dowdy-Ficklen, not a game with conference consequences. The win over Old Dominion pushed ECU to 6-0 all-time in that series and to 1-2, and NC Central is simply the next step before the American schedule arrives in earnest.
