Clemson's offense has to show up before halftime in Berkeley

Tait Reynolds and Chad Morris found something after the break against UNC. A 10:30 p.m. Eastern kickoff in Berkeley is the worst place to need that again.

Tait Reynolds threw for 76 yards in the first half Saturday and 139 in the second. North Carolina led 17-6 at the break, and Clemson allowed only a field goal the rest of the night and scored 22 points after it to win 28-20. Gideon Davidson ripped off a career-long 45-yard run and finished with 105 yards on 16 carries, Clemson's first 100-yard rusher of the season. Tyler Brown took a reverse 34 yards for the clinching touchdown with a minute left. The freshman making his first career start finished 20-of-29 for 215 yards with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Christian Bentancur and one interception, and Dabo Swinney said afterward, "You saw a kid grow up tonight."

All of that happened after halftime. That is the part Clemson fans should carry into Friday.

The good half was real. The first half was the same problem

Clemson's 401 total yards were a season high for an offense that entered the week ranked 124th nationally in rushing. The first half produced 117 yards and two field goals. Swinney had moved Chad Morris from the sideline to the coaches box for this game, saying the sideline was chaos with boards and the green-dot communication to the quarterback, and that Morris could manage the clock better from upstairs. The playbook did look wider afterward, more throws over the middle, outside runs, and Morris called the reverse that Brown scored on.

So the offense's best day of the season and its worst two quarters of the season were the same night. That is less confusing when you remember Clemson returned eight starters from 2025 and replaced 14, seven on each side. Disjointed first halves and coached-up second halves are what a reconstructed roster tends to look like.

Why Berkeley is the wrong week to start slow

Clemson plays at California Memorial Stadium on Friday at 10:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN, 7:30 local. This is the first conference game Clemson has ever played on the West Coast, a reported 2,596 miles away. By body clock, the fourth quarter starts somewhere near 1 a.m. for a team that has needed fourth quarters. Nobody wants to find out what a 22-point rally feels like at that hour.

The model gives Clemson about a 67% chance to win, which sounds comfortable until you remember the simulation is rating rosters, not a Friday night 2,596 miles from home. The ACC championship-game math swings from roughly 0.8% with a loss to about 4% with a win, small either way, but losing to a team picked 12th in the league ends that conversation in September.

Watch the first possession and the first third down. If Morris is still upstairs and the ball gets to T.J. Moore and Davidson early, the box move looks like a fix rather than a one-night reprieve. If the headset-to-freshman pipeline crackles and Clemson punts its way through a quarter, Cal gets to play with a lead in front of its own crowd.

What the defense has to hold

Clemson's run defense gave up 214 yards on 39 carries to UNC, 5.5 a pop, with Benjamin Hall going for 130. The Clemson Insider called the middle "extremely soft up the gut." The interior is thinner than planned. Markus Strong is out for the season, and Andy Burburija and Amare Adams have started at tackle with Devarrick Woods rotating in behind them.

The matchup helps. Cal is last in the ACC in rushing at 106.7 yards per game, and its backs other than Adam Mohammed are averaging 2.8 yards a carry. But the Bears' line has allowed just four sacks in three games, so the pressure has to come from somewhere other than free rushers.

Christopher Vizzina's elbow, which had to be drained, is improving but Swinney called his availability "minute by minute, day by day" as of Tuesday. Either quarterback taking the first snap Friday is fine. What is not fine is Miami arriving in Death Valley eight days later with Clemson having spent a cross-country Friday night learning nothing new about its first halves.

Full game details are at the Week 4 guide, and the forecasting approach is explained in the methodology.
