Owens has stopped giving the ball away, and Arkansas State still needs him to move it

Trey Owens had just ripped off a 34-yard keeper on third-and-1 to put Arkansas State inside the TCU 10, trailing 14-7 midway through the third quarter. On fourth-and-goal from the 1, he rolled right, found nobody open and threw it away toward Tyler Little in the back of the end zone. TCU took over at its own 1 and went 99 yards in 14 plays and eight minutes for a touchdown, tying the longest drive in Horned Frogs history. A one-score game became a 31-7 road loss, with TCU outscoring the Red Wolves 17-0 after halftime.

Those two possessions contained the whole afternoon. Owens did not turn the ball over, not an interception, not a fumble. It was the second straight start like that after he coughed up five turnovers in the first two games, four of them interceptions at Memphis. Arkansas State as a team committed zero turnovers. And it managed 11-of-24 passing for 133 yards, 5.5 per attempt, no touchdown throws, 261 total yards, 11 first downs, one scoring drive, and 0-for-3 on fourth down. The Red Wolves had walked in averaging 412.5 yards and 38 points a game. They left with 261 and seven.

So the clean-hands progress is real, and it is not yet worth much. Garrett Altman came to Jonesboro from two years coaching Vanderbilt quarterbacks, where in 2025 the Commodores led the FBS in points per play and Diego Pavia put up a school-record 4,018 total yards and 36 touchdowns. That is the version of this offense fans were sold, a quarterback-centered, flexible, prolific one. Through three games the quarterback-centered part has arrived and the prolific part has not. Saturday is the first chance to find out whether the two can coexist against a defense Arkansas State should be able to move on.

Kennesaw State, again, with the backfield thinned out

Kennesaw State comes to Centennial Bank Stadium at 6 p.m. Central on ESPN+, and Arkansas State fans do not need a reminder of the last visit. The Owls scored all 21 of their first-quarter points in 2025 on an Amari Odom touchdown pass to Gabriel Benyard, an Alexander Diggs run and an Odom keeper; Odom finished with a program-record 409 total yards. Arkansas State then scored three touchdowns spanning the second through fourth quarters, but Kennesaw State also scored a third-quarter touchdown of its own before holding on to win 28-21. Odom is gone to Syracuse. So, for that matter, is Jaylen Raynor, off to Iowa State. Kennesaw State's roster now includes Syracuse transfer Rickie Collins.

The complication is on the ground. Kenyon Clay, the team's lead back and a preseason first-team All-Sun Belt pick, left the TCU game after two carries for five yards with an apparent knee injury, and Butch Jones said this week he would know more once the team got back to Jonesboro. No designation for Saturday had been issued. With Clay out, the carries at TCU went to freshman Solomon Baggett (nine for 27) and James Lee (six for 28); Owens' seven rushes for 58 yards were the team's biggest individual total. Baggett has shown something, 70 yards on eight carries against West Georgia, but if Clay cannot go, the run game Saturday belongs to a freshman and a backup, and Owens' legs stop being a bonus and start being the plan.

Watch the first two drives for whether Altman trusts the ground game at all. If Arkansas State is throwing on early downs because it has to rather than because it wants to, the passing numbers from TCU are going to look less like the price of playing a Big 12 defense and more like this offense's ceiling.

What the defense has to keep doing

The rebuilt unit is not the reason Arkansas State lost last week, exactly, but it did not hold up either. Four hundred sixty-eight yards allowed, 337 of them through the air at 11.6 per attempt, 31 points, 7-of-14 on third down. The good news travels. TCU ran it 39 times for 131 yards, 3.4 a carry, and Kyle Williams' first career interception ended a TCU threat in the first quarter, Arkansas State's seventh takeaway in three games, top five nationally per KAIT. Against a Conference USA offense with a new quarterback, that combination of run containment and ball-hawking should be worth more than it was in Fort Worth. The pass defense is the part that needs to look different, and a Kennesaw State quarterback still new to the job is a friendlier test than TCU's.

Why Saturday carries real weight

The market has Arkansas State favored by 6.5 points at home, about -240 on the moneyline, and the model likes the Red Wolves at 66%. That is a game you expect to win and cannot assume. Win it and Arkansas State's shot at the Sun Belt title game sits near 11%; lose it and that figure drops to around 10%, small numbers either way, because the standings themselves are untouched by this one.

Full probabilities and the week's board are in the interactive guide, and the methodology explains how the simulation works.

One more thread worth knowing is that Kennesaw State head coach Jerry Mack lettered three years at Arkansas State from 2001 to 2003 and took his degree here, and he has said his household holds something like a dozen A-State degrees between his wife, his parents and himself. He beat his alma mater in Jonesboro last September. Saturday is the only chance this season to make that a one-time thing.
