Darrin Fugitt fell on the onside kick with Charlotte out of timeouts, and App State kneeled out a 26-21 win. Earlier the Mountaineers led 26-7. Then Khamani Alexander scored from a yard out, Charlotte converted the two-point try, and Collin Gill picked off Malachi Singleton and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown that made it 26-21 with about two minutes left. Dre Walker's late interception of Charlotte's quarterback stopped one Charlotte drive into App State territory; Fugitt's recovery ended the next chance. App State had been favored by 17.5 points. It is 3-0 for the first time since 2019, and it needed all of that to get there.
The schedule stops being polite now. App State plays at NC State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, on ESPNU. App State's 3-0 start came from a home win over Maine, a road win at East Carolina, and a home win over Charlotte. The model gives App State a 19 percent chance to win at NC State. Sportsbooks have NC State as roughly a two-touchdown favorite, moneyline near -600, even though App State (3-0) carries the better record into a game against a 1-2 host.
And App State has never beaten these people. The series is 0-2, two games, played in 1990 and 1992, the last one a 35-10 NC State win in Raleigh. Thirty-four years of nothing since. That is the fun part of Saturday. There is no scar tissue, no annual grievance, just a program picked sixth in the seven-team Sun Belt East going on the road with a chance to do something it has literally never done.
What actually carried the first three wins
Malachi Singleton has taken every meaningful snap in all three wins and threw for a career-high 331 yards against Charlotte.
He also threw his first interception of the season, and it was the play that turned a comfortable night into an onside kick. NC State will get more chances to force another.
The run game has not followed. Mike Anthony's first year calling the offense has produced a passing game that works and a ground game that does not, and Raleigh is a hard place to be one-dimensional. App State gained 90 net rushing yards on 33 carries against Charlotte, 2.7 per attempt, and failed on fourth-and-goal from the 1. An offense that has to throw 43 times to move the ball is a fragile thing on the road at night. If the Mountaineers can hand off for four yards a crack in Raleigh, this stays interesting into the fourth quarter.
The defense has earned some trust. Charlotte managed 247 yards, 36 net rushing yards and one third-down conversion. Caleb Sandstrom had the game's only sack. That unit is the reason 19 percent is not 5 percent.
Root for App State, and know what you are rooting for. It is not a line on the Sun Belt ledger, since this is a non-conference game, but the first win in a series the program has never won, in the kind of building that tells you whether the 3-0 start means anything.
James Madison at Old Dominion: root for Old Dominion
The model gives Old Dominion a 10% chance to win.
Kickoff is 6 p.m. ET on ESPN+. This one is league math. James Madison is the team standing between App State and any realistic Sun Belt title-game path, and the Mountaineers host the Dukes in Week 8. An Old Dominion win puts a conference loss on James Madison's ledger and leaves App State's title-game chances around 4.1 percent; a James Madison win leaves them near 1.6 percent. That is a gap of about 2.5 percentage points, meaningful in relative terms, small in absolute ones.
The problem is that Old Dominion is a 10 percent home underdog. Enjoy it if it happens; do not plan your Saturday around it.
