UConn needs its backs to give Osborne more options

UConn visits Southern Miss as a slight favorite, with productive handoffs and shorter defensive possessions central to a road rebound.

Kenji Christian, Cyncir Bowers and Trey Cornist combined for 37 rushing yards against Maryland while Kalieb Osborne took five sacks. UConn lost 38-14 at home, and Jason Candle connected the problems afterward. Without a rushing rhythm, UConn asked too much of Osborne, strained its protection and let Maryland attack more aggressively.

Southern Miss gives those backs an opening. The Golden Eagles allowed Auburn to rush for 343 yards last week. UConn visits Saturday, September 19, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+, with a 56% chance to win. UConn has a slight edge, enough to make another loss sting. This is UConn's first road game of the season; useful early-down handoffs would help keep Osborne from having to rescue possessions through the air. The interactive guide has the season outlook, with the forecasts explained in the methodology.

Candle inherited consecutive nine-win seasons from Jim Mora, and UConn went 12-1 at The Rent across 2024 and 2025. Getting beaten there makes the Maryland loss particularly uncomfortable for a fanbase accustomed to winning at home. Candle said the response had to begin with studying the film and correcting mistakes. Saturday offers a concrete way for his new staff to deliver on that response. Give the backs enough room that handing off remains a worthwhile choice.

The offense is replacing Joe Fagnano, Skyler Bell and three-time leading rusher Cam Edwards together. Against Maryland, Osborne threw two touchdowns without an interception, but completed only 10 of 21 passes. Shamar Porter contributed three catches for 62 yards and a touchdown, and JD Willoughby caught a 36-yard score. UConn has receivers who can finish a possession in one play. More productive carries would let Osborne look for those opportunities without needing a big completion to overcome every stalled series.

Southern Miss has familiar defenders capable of taking a possession away. Kobi Albert and Michael Robinson III transferred from UConn after each appeared in two games in 2025. At Auburn, Robinson forced a fumble and Albert recovered it; Albert had already intercepted three passes in the opener against Alcorn State. Their production gives Osborne and the backs reason to protect the ball even when running room appears.

UConn's defense needs to get the ball back sooner, too. Maryland scored on four consecutive possessions covering 92, 91, 71 and 75 yards. Candle said the Huskies played man coverage nearly throughout and lost pivotal contested catches. A defender staying close to a receiver has to finish the play when the pass arrives, or another long possession can continue.

Esean Carter returned from his opening-game absence to start at defensive tackle against Maryland, although he had no credited individual defensive statistic. K'Von Sherman supplied nine tackles and a forced fumble, while Anas Luqman made two tackles for loss, including a sack. Those contributions did not prevent Maryland's long scoring drives. Against Southern Miss, pressure up front needs coverage behind it that can force an incompletion and end a series.

The penalties offer modest encouragement. UConn cut its accepted total from 11 for 134 yards against Lafayette to eight for 72 against Maryland. But three pass-interference calls remained, giving Maryland help moving downfield. Breaking up passes without flags would help UConn end possessions instead of extending them.

In this matchup, a satisfying UConn possession would leave Osborne with choices. He could hand off again, take an available completion or attack downfield when the chance comes. Christian, Bowers and Cornist can make that possible by earning yards before the passing game has to.
