Marco Jones and Julio Humphrey returned fourth-quarter interceptions for touchdowns as Texas A&M beat Arizona State 48-20. Those two touchdowns helped account for the 24 points A&M collected from four Arizona State giveaways. Holmon Wiggins' offense gained 255 yards and converted three of 12 third downs. The Aggies put up 48 without consistently moving the ball.

Kentucky visits Saturday, September 19, at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN. A&M has a 95.2% chance to win, but there's plenty to watch beyond the result. Can the offensive line turn better communication into blocks that let the Aggies sustain possessions?

Give the offense a longer afternoon with the ball

A&M promoted both coordinators from within for 2026, with Wiggins on offense and Lyle Hemphill on defense. Against Arizona State, Hemphill's unit adjusted at halftime after the Sun Devils found favorable matchups for Reed Harris, according to Mike Elko. Elko also credited a rotation of roughly nine to 11 defensive linemen with helping sustain fourth-quarter pressure and pursuit. Keep rooting for that depth to produce late stops; the rotation gave A&M a way to keep chasing without asking the same few linemen to do everything.

The offensive rebuild has been less comfortable. A&M entered the preseason with center Mark Nabou Jr. as its only returning 2025 offensive-line starter after four linemen went in the NFL Draft. Against Arizona State, the Aggies averaged 2.6 yards per rush and allowed two sacks. Elko credited Nabou's blocking and communication, including fewer line miscommunications, while saying A&M still needed better blocking and better running behind those blocks. Getting everyone on the same page matters. This week, watch whether the linemen and backs turn those assignments into gains that leave manageable third downs.

Kentucky defensive coordinator Jay Bateman held that job at A&M in 2024 and 2025. His return brings more than familiarity. Kentucky recorded four sacks and three takeaways against Alabama. Mi'Quise Humphrey-Grace supplied a sack, a forced fumble and an interception return for a touchdown. Elko described Kentucky's defense as a mix of ideas Bateman liked at A&M and his own preferences, and said staff departures prompted terminology changes. Don't assume either sideline can simply read the other's calls.

A&M opens SEC play in its third consecutive home game, then visits LSU. The model puts the Aggies' playoff chances at 50.1% if A&M beats Kentucky or 34.2% if A&M loses.

Last season, A&M followed 11 straight wins with a 27-17 loss at Texas and a 10-3 home playoff loss to Miami. That finish gives fans a specific reason to care about how this offense scores, even in a game the Aggies should win comfortably.

The interactive guide has the full probabilities, with the calculation explained in the methodology. Around A&M's game, here's where the outside help can come from.

Georgia at Arkansas: root for Arkansas

Saturday, 11 a.m. CT ยท ABC

This is the upset worth getting loud about. Arkansas has an 11% chance to win, and handing Georgia a conference loss offers the largest outside benefit on this week's board. A&M's SEC title-game chances are 30.8% if Arkansas wins versus 24.1% if Georgia wins, a 6.7 percentage-point difference.

North Carolina at Clemson: root for North Carolina

Saturday, 11 a.m. CT ยท ESPN

North Carolina has a 20% chance to win. A Clemson loss helps A&M through national playoff competition, without changing the Aggies' SEC standings. A&M's playoff chances are 50.5% with a Tar Heels win versus 49% with a Clemson win, a 1.5 percentage-point benefit. Keep an eye on it, but Arkansas offers the bigger reward in the same television window.

LSU at Ole Miss: root for LSU

Saturday, 6:30 p.m. CT ยท ABC

Pull for LSU this week, then turn against the Tigers when A&M visits next week. LSU has a 32% chance to win at Ole Miss. Giving the Rebels a conference loss is the helpful result. A&M's SEC title-game chances are 26.2% with an LSU win versus 24.2% with an Ole Miss win, a 2.1 percentage-point benefit. The benefit comes from the conference result, rather than a need to make next week's opponent look stronger.
