Florida needs a sharper defensive start at Auburn

After beating Campbell 52-3, Florida visits Auburn looking to challenge receivers and execute on the edge from the opening possession.

Campbell gained 63 yards on its opening possession against Florida, with Stevie Keener catching two passes for 57 of them. Jon Sumrall urged his defensive backs to keep challenging receivers and thought they played with more confidence afterward. Florida won 52-3, but its coach also identified two good calls by defensive coordinator Brad White that the defense failed to execute on the edge.

Those are specific things to watch Saturday at Auburn, with kickoff at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. Both teams enter 2-0, and Sumrall and Alex Golesh are making their SEC debuts with their new programs. Florida has a 37.3% chance to win in the model. A road upset is a reasonable ambition, with meaningful stakes. Its playoff chances are 6.0% with a win or 2.2% with a loss.

Golesh and quarterback Byrum Brown already gave Florida a painful demonstration last September. In USF's 18-16 win in Gainesville, Brown threw for 263 yards, ran for 66 and led the possession that ended with the winning field goal. His 66-yard touchdown pass went to Keshaun Singleton; both players now play for Auburn. Brown's ability to hurt Florida through the air and on the ground makes tight coverage and sound edge assignments especially welcome this week.

Florida did settle against Campbell, holding the visitors scoreless after their opening field goal and allowing 210 yards overall. That gives fans something to build on. But Sumrall's postgame assessment leaves a clear demand for Auburn. The secondary needs to challenge receivers before a sideline correction, and the edge defenders need to carry out White's calls.

Aaron Philo gives that defense encouraging support. He started against Campbell and completed 16 of 21 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns without an interception or sack. Relief quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. threw an interception, so the confidence belongs more firmly with the starter than with the entire quarterback room. Florida gained 514 yards but converted only three of nine third downs and committed eight penalties for 95 yards. Against Auburn, Philo and the offense need to sustain drives and avoid giving yards back through penalties.

The margin also owed plenty to Vernell Brown III, who returned consecutive punts 64 and 70 yards for touchdowns early in the second quarter. Sumrall explained that Florida called punt-block looks to hold Campbell's protectors near the line longer, giving Brown more room to field and return the ball. That's an encouraging example of the staff creating an advantage, though those two scores did not require the offense to sustain a drive.

The reserves supplied less reassurance. After Campbell, Sumrall said the reserve-heavy second half fell below Florida's standard and reiterated after reviewing film that the depth had not played clean football. A comfortable win hasn't settled how reliably Florida can turn to its bench.

Kent State at Ohio State: root for Ohio State

Saturday, noon ET, FOX. Ohio State has a 100% chance to win, so this is a small nod toward the expected result. The connection is national playoff competition, with no direct effect on Florida's SEC standings. The model gives Florida a 3.6% playoff chance if Ohio State wins and 0.8% if Kent State wins, a 2.8-percentage-point difference between alternative outcomes. With Florida entering the week at 3.6%, the favored result largely preserves its position; it isn't an extra boost to add to those odds.
