Dabo Swinney said Tuesday that Tait Reynolds had earned Clemson's starting quarterback job. Christopher Vizzina was practicing and improving after his left-arm injury, with Swinney expecting him to be available against North Carolina in an elbow brace. That September 15 update gives Reynolds a promotion based on performance. In Clemson's 22-7 win over Georgia Southern, he took over after Vizzina's first three possessions and finished the game. All five scoring drives he directed ended in field goals.

Reynolds will make his first career start when North Carolina visits Saturday, September 19, at noon ET on ESPN. Fan Watch gives Clemson an 80% chance to win. Expect a home victory, but watch whether Clemson can give its new starter time to throw and opportunities to finish drives in the end zone.

The quarterback change sits inside a larger offensive reset. Swinney dismissed Garrett Riley after last season and brought back Chad Morris, his offensive coordinator from 2011-14. Clemson converted just one of 13 third downs at LSU. Against Georgia Southern, Morris's offense converted two of 14, scored one touchdown in five red-zone trips and conceded 11 tackles for loss. A different quarterback alone cannot fix that. Morris needs calls his blockers can execute and early-down gains that leave Reynolds a reasonable conversion to make.

UNC supplies two names to watch across the line. Xavier Lewis has four sacks through two games, and Jaylen Harvey had two against ETSU. Keeping those rushers out of the backfield would let Reynolds work through a possession without repeatedly having to recover lost yards. His Georgia Southern passing line, 16 completions in 27 attempts for 178 yards, gave Clemson some movement; his lost fumble also left ball security on the list of corrections. Root for the routine completion and the protected dropback as much as the big throw.

Clemson's special teams supplied much of the scoring support last week. Jackson Reach recovered a muffed punt to set up the Tigers' touchdown, Nolan Hauser made all five field-goal attempts, and Jack Smith put five of seven punts inside the 20 without a touchback. Those contributions are worth keeping. The offense can reward them by making Hauser's next scoring assignment an extra point.

The defense offered encouragement, too, holding Georgia Southern to 22 net rushing yards while Will Heldt recorded two sacks and three tackles for loss. Inside, Andy Burburija and Amare Adams started at tackle, with Markus Strong absent from the participation report; reserves Devarrick Woods and Caden Story contributed tackles. Swinney said Tuesday that Vic Burley would return this week after a two-game suspension. Watch whether the additional option helps Clemson keep closing rushing lanes as it rotates defenders.

Fan Watch gives Clemson a 3.2% chance of reaching the ACC championship game with a win versus 0.7% with a loss. No other game offers enough help to make scoreboard-watching a priority this week. The interactive guide has the projections, with their basis in the methodology.

A win is a reasonable expectation Saturday. The more encouraging sight would be Reynolds getting a manageable third down, enough protection to convert it and a chance to finish the possession with a touchdown.
