Troy needs command before the road gets harder

The win is overwhelmingly likely; protection, coverage and four-quarter control are what should hold Troy fans’ attention.

Goose Crowder threw three touchdown passes without an interception, Gavin Griffin led Troy’s ground game, and Fabian Rogosch converted the final third down that allowed the Trojans to finish a 24-21 home win over Sam Houston. Troy won, but the ending mattered. A team picked to repeat as Sun Belt West champion had to secure the result against a Sam Houston program coming off a 2-10 season.

Saturday is a chance for Troy to win comfortably and look more like the Sun Belt West favorite. Alabama State visits Veterans Memorial Stadium at 3 p.m. Central on ESPN+, and the Fan Watch model gives Troy a 98% chance to win. The margin matters less than whether the Trojans avoid the protection and coverage breakdowns that kept the opener close. The interactive Troy guide has the complete model view, with the simulation explained in the methodology.

Keep Crowder upright and keep feeding Griffin

Troy’s redesigned offense is a wide-open, RPO-based spread built to pair downhill running with vertical shots. The opener offered evidence that the combination can work. Crowder completed 12 of 24 passes for 165 yards, produced three touchdowns and avoided an interception. One productive start is encouraging without settling the longer question of whether he can supply quarterback continuity all season.

The clearest development came behind him. Gerad Parker praised the rushing improvement and described Griffin as a blend of power and speed who broke tackles. Griffin led the three-back rotation with 81 yards on 16 carries, ahead of Jordan Lovett’s 34 yards on nine attempts and Jaheim Merriweather’s 22 on six. Troy finished with 177 rushing yards, the sort of production that can keep Crowder out of obvious passing situations and make the new offense feel coherent rather than merely different.

Pass protection remained the concern. Troy surrendered four sacks for 22 yards against Sam Houston. Against Alabama State, watch whether the line gives Crowder enough clean pockets to connect the run game to the vertical element of the scheme. If Griffin is still breaking tackles and Crowder is throwing on schedule instead of escaping pressure, that will travel better than a comfortable final margin by itself.

Disruption is only half the defensive assignment

Troy’s defense immediately recovered its most recognizable trait, producing 13 tackles for loss, four sacks and an interception in the opener. That resembles the 2025 identity, when the Trojans recorded 37 sacks and scored five defensive touchdowns.

But Sam Houston supplied a sharp warning beneath those negative plays. Troy held the Bearkats to 38 rushing yards yet allowed 335 passing yards and three passing touchdowns. Landyn Locke’s 30 completions were distributed among nine receivers, so this was not one isolated coverage bust feeding one target; Sam Houston repeatedly found answers through the air.

Andrew Body is capable of pressing exactly that weakness while adding a different problem with his legs. He won the 2025 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year award after throwing for 1,770 yards with 20 touchdowns and one interception and rushing for another 518 yards and four scores in eight games. The desired defensive performance is therefore specific. Contain Body without surrendering easy completions behind an aggressive rush. More havoc is welcome, but Troy should not need a sack or takeaway to end every threatening possession.

Treat the history as the expectation, not a guarantee

Troy leads this series 14-2 and has won 11 straight meetings. That history fits the model’s overwhelming forecast, but Alabama State arrives with more substance than the usual ceremonial visitor. Troy received 12 of 14 first-place votes as the Sun Belt West favorite, while defending SWAC East champion Alabama State received 16 first-place votes to win its division. Both teams entered the season carrying championship expectations, even if they did so at different competitive levels.

Troy does not need perfection, but another narrow escape would be hard to celebrate. A brief Alabama State surge would not erase the opener’s promising signs, and even a lopsided Troy victory would not settle the questions about protection and coverage. The satisfying version is sustained control. Griffin and the backs keep the offense on schedule, Crowder absorbs fewer free hits, the pass defense makes Body earn long drives, and Troy’s pressure closes possessions rather than disguising coverage trouble.

This is Troy’s second home game before consecutive trips to Missouri and Utah State, followed by an idle week before conference play. Saturday is the final home opportunity to turn Week 1’s mixed evidence into something steadier before the setting and opposition become less forgiving.
