LaNorris Sellers completed 19 of 23 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns as South Carolina opened the season by beating Kent State 57-0. After an opening punt, the Gamecocks ended their next eight possessions in the end zone and finished with 645 yards. That is exactly how an overmatched opponent should look when Kendal Briles, Sellers and a reconstructed offense are communicating properly.
The smooth shifts between the huddle and tempo mattered more than the point total. Shane Beamer said Briles and the offensive staff communicated calmly over the headsets, and he praised the coordinator’s feel for moving between the huddle and more tempo. South Carolina also ran for 278 net yards while allowing one four-yard sack behind starters Carter Miller, Nolan Hay, Emmanuel Poku, Dayne Arnett and Darius Gray. That group came from a much larger rebuild. South Carolina added eight upperclassmen offensive linemen through the transfer portal, bringing a listed 8,797 career snaps into the spring.
Towson gives the Gamecocks another chance to make that communication ordinary. Kickoff is Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on SECN+, and the Fan Watch model gives South Carolina a 99.7% chance to win. The Tigers just allowed Navy to rush for 506 yards in a 42-15 loss, so South Carolina should be able to establish the run without reducing Briles’ offense to a succession of safe, predictable calls. The better watch is whether the line handles tempo changes and whether Sellers keeps the whole offense organized while the staff rotates players.
Keep the roster intact for what follows
Towson is South Carolina’s final game before nine consecutive SEC contests begin with Mississippi State on September 19. That schedule makes continuity more valuable than a decorative final margin. Beamer said the Gamecocks avoided cramping and came out healthy after a 95-degree opener; repeating that outcome matters more than leaving the starters in to chase another touchdown.
Dylan Stewart did not participate against Kent State, and the game book offers no recovery timetable. His absence matters even after a shutout. South Carolina allowed only 179 yards but produced just one sack and one interception. Towson can offer more snaps for the defensive rotation, but it cannot settle how disruptive that group will be with Stewart back, or against SEC blockers.
Nor can Saturday answer the question that still hangs over Shane Beamer’s program. South Carolina went from 9-4 and a No. 19 finish in 2024 to 4-8 in 2025. During that four-win season, the Gamecocks led or were within one score entering the fourth quarter in 10 of 12 games, yet went only 4-3 when leading or tied after three quarters; Beamer’s first four teams had gone 25-3 in that situation. Kent State never tested late-game execution, and Towson probably will not either.
The interactive South Carolina guide collects the week’s projections, with the calculations explained in the methodology.
Against Towson, watch South Carolina’s execution rather than the point total. Clean protection, a controlled running game, purposeful changes of pace and early substitutions earned by efficient possessions would make the opener look repeatable before the schedule stops offering rehearsals.
