Jacurri Brown carried 13 times for 98 yards against Houston Christian, left during the second quarter after becoming sick and returned to run again in the third. Rice won 31-3, but Brown completed only 2 of 5 passes for 11 yards. That is the tension Rice takes to South Bend. The quarterback looked dangerous running the option, yet the passing counter that could keep Notre Dame from crowding the line never appeared.
Rice visits No. 3 Notre Dame on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Central on NBC. The Fan Watch model gives the Owls a 0.5% chance to win, so an upset would be extraordinary. The question is whether Rice can sustain its option offense against vastly harder opposition.
Make Notre Dame defend more than the run
Rice controlled the ball for 39:32 against HCU, ran 70 times for 465 net yards and converted 11 of 17 third downs. That rushing total was Rice’s largest since 2004, and it created exactly the possession structure an underdog needs, with repeated manageable downs, long drives and fewer possessions for the favorite.
The production was genuinely distributed. Rice’s 11 named rushers totaled 474 yards before a separate team entry of minus-9 brought the official total to 465. Tyvonn Byars supplied his first collegiate 100-yard game with 104 yards on 16 carries; D’Andre Hardeman Jr. added 77 yards and a touchdown, while Carson Morgan gained 54 at 7.7 per carry. That depth gives Rice several ways to keep the option rotation fresh instead of asking Brown to absorb every important carry.
Notre Dame offers a brutal rebuttal. The Irish held Wisconsin to 67 net rushing yards on 31 attempts. Rice therefore needs Brown to complete enough timely throws that safeties and linebackers cannot attack the option immediately. He does not need to turn this into a conventional passing offense. A few completions behind aggressive run support could preserve the space and favorable down-and-distance situations that powered the opener.
Brown’s condition matters just as much as his arm. No postgame diagnosis or determination about his Notre Dame availability had been established by September 7. If he plays but cannot remain a credible keeper, Notre Dame can narrow its assignments further. Watch both whether Brown starts and whether Rice is willing to involve him fully after the opening series.
Give the offense another possession to work with
Rice’s defense held HCU to 244 yards, 13 first downs and 4-of-13 third-down conversions while producing three sacks and an interception. HCU did not score a touchdown; its only points followed a turnover on downs near midfield and came on a 42-yard field goal. Those are encouraging opening returns, but Notre Dame can reveal whether the unit can still get off the field when the opposing offense supplies much less margin for error.
For Rice, defensive success does not require shutting down the Irish all afternoon. One early stop, one takeaway or one red-zone stand could buy the option another long possession and keep the game from accelerating away. That is the complementary formula worth rooting for, with Brown making Notre Dame honor the pass, the backfield extending drives and the defense returning the ball before the score dictates a style Rice does not want to play.
The schedule makes this a sharp transition rather than a final judgment. Rice follows Notre Dame by hosting Western Michigan, visiting Fresno State and then opening American play at home against UTSA. Sustained drives in South Bend would show that the rushing identity can travel, while timely completions against Notre Dame’s run support would matter even if the final score is lopsided.
Rice fans have a concrete South Bend assignment. Watch whether Brown’s passing counter keeps Notre Dame from collapsing on the option, and whether the backfield can preserve the possession structure that controlled the opener. The interactive guide contains the full Week 2 view, and the probabilities are explained in the methodology. The result is a long shot; making Notre Dame defend every phase of the option for four quarters is the attainable thing that could make it interesting.
