Old Dominion returns to Blacksburg with protection on the line

The Monarchs have won at Lane Stadium before. This trip turns on whether Quinn Henicle’s rebuilt offense can withstand Virginia Tech’s pressure.

Zion Frink knocked the ball loose from Jalyn Daniels at the Old Dominion 2, and Brandon Crutchfield recovered in the end zone. Six plays and 80 yards later, Quinn Henicle finished the answer with a 13-yard touchdown run. Instead of trailing Norfolk State after a 93-yard opening drive, the Monarchs had established the pattern that carried them to a 31-10 win. The defense created an opening, and the new quarterback cashed it in.

Henicle completed 9 of 12 passes for 137 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, then added 68 net rushing yards and two more scores. That is a genuinely encouraging debut for the successor offense. First-year coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kody Cook called the offense, while Henicle took 12 of ODU’s 13 pass attempts.

The protection remains the concern. ODU scored on all five official red-zone opportunities, but Henicle also absorbed consecutive second-quarter sacks totaling 17 yards. Norfolk State entered as a documented FCS underdog, so the opener showed that ODU could finish drives without establishing that the rebuilt offense will hold up against conference-level resistance.

The part of last year that must travel

Old Dominion has no reason to walk into Lane Stadium intimidated. The Monarchs led Virginia Tech 28-0 at halftime there last season and won 45-26, earning the program’s first victory in Blacksburg and its first road win over a Power Four opponent.

What cannot be assumed is that the same formula remains available. ODU entered 2026 with only one returning offensive starter, although Henicle won the quarterback job and became a captain after winning his first two starts and earning Cure Bowl MVP honors. The confidence is earned; the supporting cast is largely new.

That makes protection the center of Saturday’s game. ODU does not need Henicle to reproduce four touchdowns to show progress. It needs Cook’s offense to keep the down-and-distance manageable, give Henicle time to make decisions and avoid turning one pressure into the kind of consecutive negative plays Norfolk State produced. If the rebuilt unit can do that on the road, last week’s red-zone efficiency will look more portable and less opponent-dependent.

The defense can buy it time. ODU produced three takeaways and three sacks in the opener, with Mario Easterly adding an interception and Javen Gibson forcing a fumble on a 29-yard strip-sack. Norfolk State finished with 220 yards and converted only 4 of 15 third downs. The early 93-yard drive keeps the performance from being spotless, but Frink and Crutchfield showed exactly how this experienced group can change a game before the offense is fully settled.

How much belief belongs here

Kickoff is Saturday at noon Eastern on The CW Network. The simulation gives Old Dominion a 29% chance to win, which makes another Lane Stadium victory a substantial upset rather than an outcome the season requires.

Still, this is unusually credible upset territory. ODU finished last season 10-3, won its final six games and beat South Florida 24-10 in the Cure Bowl, so last year’s win in Blacksburg belongs to a larger breakthrough rather than an isolated afternoon. This week asks whether that progress can survive an offensive reconstruction.

The answer matters before the schedule tightens further. After Virginia Tech, the Monarchs host East Carolina and then open Sun Belt play against James Madison. Norfolk State showed that Cook and Henicle have something workable; Virginia Tech can expose whether the protection is sturdy enough to carry it into the games that shape ODU’s East Division ambitions.

There is no secondary scoreboard result worth borrowing attention from this week. The full set of simulations is in the interactive guide, with the model explained on the methodology page. In Blacksburg, watch the space around Henicle. If the new offense protects him and the defense keeps manufacturing short fields, the Monarchs have a real path to making Lane Stadium theirs again.
