Jacob Sexton injured his right leg on Oklahoma Stateâs fifth offensive play at Tulsa, left on a cart and did not return. Desmond Magiya took over at left tackle, and the Cowboys allowed two sacks while struggling to protect Mestemaker consistently. Oklahoma State lost 24-10, committed four turnovers and failed four of its six fourth-down attempts in Eric Morrisâs debut.
Those fourth downs tell the story more clearly than the Cowboysâ 368 total yards. Caleb Hawkins was stopped at the Tulsa 3, Ayo Adeyi at the Tulsa 41 and Miles Coleman at the Oklahoma State 34; Tre Page III fumbled on the other attempt. Two additional possessions reached Tulsa territory and produced no points. Against Oregon, merely moving the ball will not count as progress if Oklahoma State keeps handing away the possessions that could make the afternoon competitive.
The rematch kicks off Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN. The model gives Oklahoma State a 3.9% chance to win at home, so an upset would be an astonishing bonus rather than a fair demand of a team coming off that opener. A functional home debut would mean giving Drew Mestemaker time, communicating the calls, protecting the football and making Oregon earn its separation.
The old wound belongs to the crowd
Oregonâs 69-3 victory last September remains the emotional charge in this game. The Ducks gained 631 yards, scored touchdowns on nine of their first 11 drives and handed Oklahoma State its largest defeat since 1907.
The people filling Boone Pickens Stadium remember that humiliation more directly than this roster does. Oklahoma State entered 2026 with 91 newcomers, including 66 transfers, and only 24 returning players. Only Jaleel Johnson and LaDainian Fields among the 22 starters at Tulsa had played for the Cowboys in 2025.
That split matters. The sellout can carry revenge-level energy; Oklahoma State sold its single-game inventory for Oregon by August 27. But Morrisâs players should not be judged as though they personally owe repayment of all 66 points. Their responsibility is to prevent a new rout by fixing problems they actually created at Tulsa.
Watch the protection before the fireworks
Morris came to Stillwater after his 2025 North Texas offense led the FBS in both scoring and total offense. His previous 13 seasons as a head coach or coordinator produced nine top-five passing offenses and 10 top-10 total offenses. That history makes the Tulsa performance alarming, but one game is too little evidence to conclude that Morrisâs offense will not translate to Stillwater.
Oklahoma State imported real familiarity with the system. Twenty-one players had previously played for Morris at North Texas, including Mestemaker, Hawkins and Wyatt Young. Eight Oklahoma State starters at Tulsa came from that background. Even so, Oklahoma Stateâs official recap said communication was an issue at times. Familiarity within one group did not make a nearly new lineup function as one unit.
Mestemaker completed 29 of 49 passes for 241 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, while the offense averaged 4.3 yards per play and completed no pass longer than 27 yards. Against Oregon, watch whether the Cowboys can identify pressure early, avoid free rushers and create a few throws that change field position. Sextonâs season-ending absence makes Oklahoma Stateâs left-tackle plan especially important, but Tulsa did not provide enough individual evidence to pin the lineâs entire performance on Magiya.
A respectable afternoon does not require Morris to unveil the finished version of his offense. It requires Oklahoma State to stop turning promising movement into empty possessions. One sustained touchdown drive, a credible answer in short yardage and a clean stretch from Mestemaker would say more about the rebuild than a pile of low-risk completions after Oregon has taken control.
The defense has one useful piece to preserve
Oklahoma State held Tulsa to one conversion on 11 third downs and LaDainian Fields made an interception. The same defense allowed 6.3 yards per play, generated no sacks and surrendered several explosive gains, including completions of 56 and 47 yards.
That is neither a breakthrough nor a lost cause. Third-down resistance gives the Cowboys a way to let the crowd matter, provided they stop Oregon from skipping third down with explosive plays. A couple of early stops could keep the game emotionally alive; repeated busts would let the Ducks build another avalanche before Morrisâs offense has enough possessions to settle.
No result elsewhere can make Saturday successful for Oklahoma State. The interactive guide and methodology provide the broader model context, but the Cowboysâ task is direct. Protect Mestemaker, communicate clearly and finish the drives they earn. The crowd can bring last yearâs anger. This team has to supply this yearâs competence.
