Kamario Taylor threw four touchdown passes, ran for another and went unsacked as Mississippi State scored on its first eight possessions. The Bulldogs beat UL Monroe 62-13, and the final margin barely captures how quickly they settled the opener. Taylor had directed eight scoring drives before the offense finally punted.
The broader numbers were just as loud. Mississippi State set a school record with 762 total yards, split into 417 through the air and 345 on the ground. The Bulldogs had already amassed 459 yards by halftime, then opened the third quarter with a two-play, 70-yard touchdown drive.
Taylor did not have to manufacture all of it himself. J.J. Hill, Taylor, Kolin Wilson and Fluff Bothwell each rushed for at least 50 yards, while Anthony Evans III, Marquis Johnson, Zion Ragins and Sanfrisco Magee caught one touchdown apiece. If Minnesota devotes extra attention to Taylor, Mississippi State has already shown it can spread the ball among several backs and receivers.
The opener clarified what Taylor can do. Mississippi State no longer needs to imagine what Taylor might look like with time and multiple productive options. Now the Bulldogs need to reproduce that offensive balance away from Davis Wade Stadium.
Mississippi State at Minnesota

The interactive guide gives Mississippi State a 49% chance to win. That is close enough to treat a victory as entirely realistic, but Minnesota has won eight consecutive games at Huntington Bank Stadium after going 7-0 there last season and beating Eastern Illinois 59-7 in this season’s opener.
Watch Taylor before watching the yardage total. He completed 22 of 34 passes for 354 yards without an interception against ULM and added 59 rushing yards on six carries. Jeff Lebby praised his pocket work, and Taylor said he stayed in the pocket better, but both still identified room for growth there. If Taylor keeps his eyes downfield, moves through reads and uses his legs without abandoning clean pockets, Mississippi State can leave Minneapolis encouraged even without approaching 762 yards again.
The offensive line gives him a real starting point. LJ Prudhomme, Jakheem Shumpert-Perkins, Miles McVay, Canon Boone and DJ Chester allowed no sacks, while ULM managed only one tackle for loss. Minnesota should make that group sustain blocks and communicate in a road environment; keeping Taylor clean under that pressure would matter more than piling up uncontested explosive plays.
The supporting cast also needs to stay broad while the game is competitive. Freshman J.J. Hill’s 118 yards and two touchdowns came on seven fourth-quarter carries, after Mississippi State had established control. Transfers Ragins, Amaree Williams and Jardin Gilbert started; Ragins caught a touchdown, and Williams shared a sack and a tackle for loss. Those newcomers already showed they can fill useful roles. They now need to remain dependable against Minnesota when every possession carries weight.
Mississippi State’s defense has a similar opportunity. Zach Arnett and Matt Brock’s unit held ULM to 278 yards and 3-of-16 on third down, with two sacks and six tackles for loss, although it did not force a turnover. That performance supplied encouraging evidence of disruption and third-down control. Repeating those traits against Minnesota would give Taylor more chances to play from a stable game script instead of asking him to chase points on the road.
None of this requires pretending the opener settled the season. Lebby said there was plenty to clean up; Taylor cited missed throws and reads, and linebacker Jalen Smith called the defensive performance decent while pointing to corrections of his own. Their restraint fits the program’s position. Mississippi State went from 9-4 in 2022 to 5-7 in 2023, 2-10 in 2024 and 5-8 last season, so the Bulldogs are still pursuing their first winning year since 2022.
No other game carries meaningful value for Mississippi State this week, so all the attention belongs on Minneapolis. The methodology explains the simulation behind the nearly even odds, while a road win would show that the spectacular opener can carry into a tougher setting.
