Roman Gagliano completed 20 of 26 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns, avoided both interceptions and sacks, and ran for another score in Middle Tennessee’s opener. Antonio Martin Jr. carried 15 times for 103 yards, while Terrence Brown Jr. turned four carries into 66 yards and a touchdown. Their work helped the Blue Raiders beat Murray State 38-14.
Then the weather denied them a finish. Three delays totaling four hours and 15 minutes forced the game to be called with 11:01 remaining. Middle Tennessee won comfortably, but the missing fourth-quarter work matters this week because Saturday’s trip to Marshall is all about whether a promising new offense can last.
Middle Tennessee at Marshall

The Fan Watch simulation gives Middle Tennessee a 25% chance to win. That makes a road victory a real upset, not a result the Blue Raiders should be expected to deliver. The conference-championship outlook lands near 6% with a win and 4.5% with a loss, so this nonconference game will not decide the CUSA race. Middle Tennessee needs Scelfo’s balanced offense to keep producing into the fourth quarter against Marshall.
Anthony Scelfo’s first game as offensive coordinator produced an unusually clean split of 200 passing yards and 196 rushing yards, primarily from a no-huddle shotgun attack. That balance directly addressed the old weakness. Middle Tennessee averaged only 105.5 rushing yards and 22.42 points per game in 2025, so Martin and Brown gave fans a materially different picture rather than a fresh label on the same offense.
It was also the highest-scoring performance of Derek Mason’s tenure, and Middle Tennessee has now scored at least 30 points in three consecutive games dating to November 2025. After consecutive three-win seasons, Mason needs that scoring streak to become sustained Year 3 improvement, and Marshall offers a much stronger test than a shortened opener against an FCS opponent.
Mason did not make a coordinator-only adjustment. He replaced Bodie Reeder with Scelfo and installed new coaches for the offensive line, running backs and tight ends. The overhaul accompanied a roster that entered spring with eight returning starters, 30 returning lettermen and 37 newcomers. Producing immediate cohesion amid that much change was encouraging; reproducing it on the road would make the opening performance substantially more credible.
Watch whether Scelfo can keep Marshall from dictating how Middle Tennessee attacks. If the Herd crowds Martin and Brown, Gagliano needs to find Cam’ron Lacy and keep the offense out of obvious passing downs. If Marshall protects against the pass, the backs need to make the lighter box expensive. Martin offers more than one good box score here. He rushed for 1,228 yards and 11 touchdowns under Scelfo at Southeastern Louisiana in 2024, so the coordinator’s most productive opening-week back already knows the offense.
Change last year’s ending
Middle Tennessee led Marshall 28-21 entering the fourth quarter last season. The Herd then scored 21 unanswered points and won 42-28, with Carlos Del Rio-Wilson accounting for four passing touchdowns and one rushing score in the game. That history makes durability concrete. If the Blue Raiders again reach the fourth quarter with a chance, can their offense keep possessing the ball and answering scores?
Marshall brings back Del Rio-Wilson, Toby Payne and De’Andre Tamarez, the three players who accounted for five touchdowns in that meeting. Middle Tennessee arrives with Gagliano instead of Nicholas Vattiato and Scelfo directing a rebuilt offense. One side retains the principal creators of last year’s comeback; the other is trying to produce a different ending with different decision-makers.
A win would be a serious road achievement and a meaningful boost to belief in the rebuild. A competitive loss would still show progress if Gagliano stays efficient, Martin and Brown keep producing, Lacy threatens Marshall downfield and the offense functions into the final minutes. A fast start followed by another late disappearance would hit the precise concern this rematch raises.
In Huntington, Gagliano, Martin, Brown and Lacy need to keep producing into the final minutes against the Marshall core that erased last year’s fourth-quarter lead. The probabilities above come from the 50,000-season simulation described in the methodology.
