Ivory Aikens returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown, Cillian Bonner dropped three punts inside the two-yard line, and Alijah Williams intercepted a pass with 28 seconds left to preserve Wofford’s 17-13 win over Gardner-Webb. The Terriers pulled that off while being outgained 438-208 and producing only 12 first downs. That is the warning for Kent State. Wofford does not have to control ordinary downs if it can steal enough decisive ones.
Kent State arrives at Saturday’s home opener after a 57-0 loss at South Carolina. The Gamecocks were favored by 35.5 points, so nobody needed the Golden Flashes to prove they belonged in the SEC; finishing another three touchdowns beyond that already severe expectation made the result harder to dismiss as routine schedule damage.
Saturday’s game kicks off at noon ET on ESPN+. The model gives Kent State an 86% chance to win, which makes this a game to watch for control rather than suspense. Wofford’s path to an upset is narrow, but the Terriers demonstrated last week exactly how that path can work.
Make Wofford earn the length of the field
Kent State cannot give Aikens a coverage seam or let Bonner repeatedly force Dru DeShields to begin beside his own goal line. When the Golden Flashes do inherit poor field position, the offense needs enough patience to escape it without handing Wofford another short field or takeaway.
That asks DeShields and the backfield to improve on a bleak opener. Kent State generated 179 total yards against South Carolina, including 79 passing yards, while converting five of 14 third downs. Mason King received the first chance to claim the lead role in the rebuilt backfield, finishing with eight carries for 26 yards plus two catches for 21.
Those numbers extend an older concern instead of creating a new one. Kent State averaged 8.07 yards per pass attempt in 2025, but it managed only 97.2 rushing yards per game and converted 27.6% of its third downs. The offense could hit explosive passes during last season’s turnaround; it did not consistently build drives underneath them. Against Wofford, fans should look for DeShields to push the ball downfield and then see whether King and the line can keep the next possession alive.
A couple of explosive completions would force Wofford to defend more of the field. If Kent State turns those gains into points, one punt, return or interception becomes less likely to outweigh several productive snaps.
Win early downs against Gerald Modest Jr.
Wofford can also create its preferred game without a return touchdown. Gerald Modest Jr. has carried 39 times for 192 yards and three touchdowns through two games. If he keeps the Terriers ahead of the chains, their special teams can keep trading field position while their offense waits for one short drive.
The matchup goes directly at Kent State’s unresolved defensive weakness. The Golden Flashes allowed 191.4 rushing yards per game in 2025, and opponents converted 44% of their third downs. South Carolina then rushed for 278 yards as Kent State allowed 645 total yards and seven conversions in eight third-down attempts.
The personnel responsible for changing that pattern is no longer theoretical. Thomas Aden, Josue Cordoba, Jaihien Roy and Antonio Bottiggi started on the defensive line in Columbia, with Rocco Nicholl, Hayden Dawahare and Trey Rubinstein at linebacker. That front allowed 7.1 yards per rushing attempt, although Nicholl produced Kent State’s only sack.
Against Wofford, Kent State needs to hold Modest near the line, force third-and-long situations and end possessions before the Terriers cross midfield. Wofford has converted 12 of 23 third downs and scored on all seven of its red-zone possessions, so Kent State should not count on recovering after allowing manageable late downs or a trip inside the 20.
A favored team should make isolated plays stay isolated
The 2025 defense had already established a low baseline, and South Carolina pushed below it. The offense had already needed a steadier running game, and the opener showed no improvement. Kent State also played through a 95-degree kickoff, and Mark Carney said unnamed players were lost to second-half cramps despite the team’s hydration preparation. The heat and cramping make Kent State’s recovery worth watching, but there is no basis to project a specific absence.
None of that makes one SEC road loss a season verdict. Kent State went from 0-12 in 2024 to 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the MAC in 2025, a five-win jump the school calls the second largest in program history. This home opener can protect the competitive floor established during that rebound, but only if the Golden Flashes prevent Wofford’s high-leverage plays from turning a heavily favored afternoon into a possession game.
After Saturday, Kent State visits Ohio State before opening MAC play at home against Ball State. The broader forecast is available in the interactive guide, and the methodology explains how it is calculated. First, the Golden Flashes need sustained offense, functional run defense and uneventful special teams to keep Wofford’s isolated plays from deciding the home opener.
