FIU needs a different kind of game against Buffalo

The Panthers’ home opener turns on JJ Kohl protecting possessions, Anthony Carrie restoring balance and the defense repeating its best work.

JJ Kohl threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. South Florida turned the three ensuing possessions into one touchdown and two field goals, repeatedly making FIU defend the damage from its own quarterback. The Panthers lost their opener 19-9 at South Florida.

Kohl still completed 31 of 50 passes for 301 yards, so the debut was not empty. The problem was when that production arrived and what accompanied it. FIU’s only touchdown finished an 87-yard drive on the final play; South Florida had kept the Panthers out of the end zone before then. Against Buffalo, FIU needs those 301 yards to produce earlier scoring without possessions handed back.

Let the defense play a normal game

The encouraging part of the opener deserves more than a consolatory nod. FIU held Michael Van Buren Jr. to 100 passing yards, no passing touchdowns and no completion longer than 14 yards. That matters because the Panthers allowed 249.9 passing yards per game and 26 passing touchdowns in 2025. One afternoon cannot establish a repaired pass defense, but holding South Florida to 100 passing yards is an encouraging start.

The disruption also came from identifiable places. DeeJay Holmes Jr. made FIU’s only sack and two tackles for loss, while Elisha Baldridge added two tackles for loss. Jai-Ayviauynn Celestine and Ryan Gadson each broke up a pass. Those are the actions to watch again Saturday, not merely a low yardage total, but pressure and contested throws that can survive from week to week.

Kohl’s ball security is therefore about more than avoiding an ugly box score. If FIU stops giving Buffalo short or sudden possessions, the defense gets a fair chance to turn its promising first performance into a repeatable strength.

Carrie and the backfield have to change the workload

Anthony Carrie started at South Florida but gained 31 yards on 10 carries. FIU’s full rushing rotation finished with 80 net yards on 25 attempts and no touchdown. That left Kohl throwing 50 times in his first start, exactly the sort of workload that magnifies every quarterback mistake.

The contrast with last season is sharp. FIU rushed for 2,361 yards, scored 26 rushing touchdowns and set a program record at 4.9 yards per attempt in 2025. That ground game was not decoration; it was the dependable support underneath Willie Simmons’s first-year breakthrough.

FIU went 7-5 in the 2025 regular season, finished 5-3 in Conference USA and earned its first bowl berth since 2019. The 0-1 start does not erase that progress or settle whether it can last. It does make Buffalo a timely chance to see whether Simmons’s second team can recover the complementary formula behind it through productive rushing, manageable passing situations and a defense that is not constantly asked to absorb offensive giveaways.

How to watch the home opener

Buffalo visits Pitbull Stadium at 6 p.m. ET Saturday on ESPN+. This is FIU’s 2026 home opener and the first football meeting between the programs.

The model gives FIU a 64% chance to win, which makes this a game to approach with confidence rather than desperation. The Conference USA title-game outlook is 16% in the win branch and 13% in the loss branch. Those are alternative outcomes from the same entering-Week-2 forecast. The forecast shows meaningful movement, but no single nonconference result determines the season.

There is no outside game worth dividing attention over this week. The full interactive guide and methodology provide the broader forecast, but Saturday’s real payoff is immediate and local. Watch whether Carrie produces on early downs, whether Kohl turns passing volume into points before the final possession, and whether Holmes and the secondary can make last week’s defensive showing look like the beginning of something durable.
