Bailey’s encore needs help from the rest of Coastal

The Week 2 watch is whether Coastal can pair its emerging passing game with steadier rushing, protection, run defense and late execution.

Deuce Bailey threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns without an interception as Coastal Carolina turned a 336-114 first-half yardage deficit into a 311-77 second-half advantage at West Virginia. The comeback still ended in a 31-24 loss, but it gave Ryan Beard’s rebuild a considerably more interesting starting point than the opening half suggested.

Bailey’s performance was a strong first answer at quarterback. The former Missouri State transfer won the competition with Tre Guerra, took every recorded Coastal pass attempt and completed 21 of 37. It was also only one answer. Nick Petrino’s offense attempted 37 passes against 27 recorded rushes, and its 373 passing yards dwarfed its 52 rushing yards. Five sacks further exposed the difference between having an explosive passing game and having a complete offense.

That is what Saturday’s home opener against Fordham should clarify. Coastal kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+, and the model gives the Chanticleers a 95% chance to win. Coastal is expected to win, so the more revealing question is whether Bailey can operate without having to rescue the offense.

Let Bailey lead without making him carry everything

Fordham has shown that its defense can create trouble even during an 0-2 start. The Rams forced three turnovers and registered seven quarterback hurries against Colgate, then made nine tackles for loss with three sacks at North Dakota State. That disruption is the clearest route to an uncomfortable evening for Coastal. Pressure Bailey, wreck the early downs and turn giveaways into short fields.

So watch the work around the quarterback. A credible running game should keep Petrino out of obvious passing situations, while cleaner protection should let Bailey distribute the ball without repeatedly extending plays under pressure. Coastal does not need to hide the pass-forward identity that emerged in Morgantown. It needs enough balance to make that identity sustainable.

The same distinction applies to the defense. Coastal allowed 281 rushing yards on 61 attempts at West Virginia, even though Beard said the Chants tackled and fit the run better after halftime, increased their pressure and pushed the ball toward the perimeter. L.D. Scott’s unit now gets a favorable chance to make those adjustments visible from the opening series rather than after a half of damage.

Several Coastal defenders could help turn those adjustments into results. Jordan Thompson made 11 tackles and shared Coastal’s only sack with Mitchell Toney, while Marcellius Pulliam added 10 tackles and Ahmad Poole forced a fumble. Against Fordham, progress should look like that activity producing earlier stops, longer fields and fewer emergency tackles downfield.

The rebuild should look more connected at home

Beard did not arrive in Conway with strangers beside him. He brought Missouri State coordinators Petrino and Scott into the same jobs they held under him there. That established staff connection matters because the roster itself underwent extensive reconstruction. Coastal lost 17 of its 22 primary starters from 2025, including 10 on offense, while Beard brought 11 Missouri State players and nine assistants with him.

The second-half response at West Virginia suggested that some of that shared language can travel. Saturday can show whether it also produces four-quarter order. That means substitutions happening smoothly, the offense avoiding wasted possessions and the defense playing its corrected run fits before halftime.

Late execution belongs on the list, too. Coastal had forced West Virginia into a 47-yard field-goal attempt in the fourth quarter, but a roughing-the-kicker penalty awarded a first down and preceded an 11-yard touchdown run; later, both Coastal onside kicks went out of bounds. Fordham should not require another comeback, but that is exactly why the small operational moments deserve attention now. A heavy favorite can use them to establish habits before conference games make every possession expensive.

Saturday also carries a little history without pretending these teams are rivals. Fordham and Coastal have never played, and the Rams have never previously played a football game in South Carolina. Joe Moglia supplies the connection. The Fordham graduate and Hall of Famer went 56-22 as Coastal’s head coach, Fordham’s stadium bears his name, and he now holds senior athletics and football roles at Coastal.

The setting will make Beard’s first home game feel larger than an ordinary FCS visit. Coastal has planned a White Out, three in-game drone shows and complimentary concessions for ticketed fans through the third quarter. The football standard should remain simpler than the spectacle. Let Bailey stay dangerous, give him functional rushing and protection, and make Scott’s second-half defensive fixes appear in the first.

The model’s 95% win probability and Coastal’s full set of modeled outcomes are available in the interactive guide, with the simulation explained in the methodology.
