BYU’s Big 12 opener puts a new safety in Noah Fifita’s sights

BYU faces Arizona with immediate conference stakes, a reshuffled secondary and two unlikely but useful upsets elsewhere.

Raider Damuni injured his left leg late in the second quarter against Utah Tech, needed help leaving the field and did not return. BYU kept rolling to a 63-7 win, but Damuni later indicated that he expects to miss much, though not all, of his senior season. That is the consequential piece BYU carried out of an otherwise comfortable opening night.

The Cougars now host Arizona on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Pacific on FOX. The model gives BYU a 66% chance to win, and this one carries real leverage. Victory corresponds to a 17.8% playoff chance and a 22.9% chance to reach the Big 12 Championship game. If BYU loses, the corresponding chances are 8.2% and 5.4%.

Conference stakes arrive immediately in Week 2. BYU and Arizona are playing their Big 12 openers, and the Cougars have not begun conference play this early since facing Air Force in Week 2 of 2010. BYU went 11-2 and tied for first in the league in 2024, then went 12-2 and reached its first Big 12 Championship game in 2025. Saturday therefore starts the part of the schedule that can finally turn two years of contention into the championship breakthrough BYU has been chasing.

Watch Tommy Prassas against Fifita

Tommy Prassas is listed to replace Damuni against Arizona, while Faletau Satuala has been reported back to full health. Prassas’s assignment is straightforward. Prassas tackles cleanly, communicates well enough to prevent cheap explosives and makes Fifita work through full-field reads rather than attacking the replacement immediately.

That assignment deserves attention because Arizona already let Fifita operate efficiently in its opener. He completed 22 of 29 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-7 win over Northern Arizona. BYU is asking Prassas to step in precisely when the quality and experience of the opposing passing game rise.

Satuala’s status matters just as much. He started the Utah Tech game after returning from a summer foot fracture, but he played only briefly and recorded one assisted tackle. His reported return to full health is encouraging; Arizona should reveal much more about whether his workload and impact have returned too. BYU does not need Prassas to replace Damuni alone if Satuala can again cover substantial, effective snaps beside him.

Kelly Poppinga’s first game as defensive coordinator supplied one promising continuity signal and one open question. BYU allowed 184 yards and created four takeaways, but Siale Esera recorded its only sack. Takeaways can rescue a defense on any Saturday. Against Fifita, however, the Cougars also need pressure that disrupts throws before a reshuffled safety group must hold its coverage too long.

Bachmeier can make Arizona defend the whole offense

Bear Bachmeier completed 16 of 20 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns in one half against Utah Tech, adding a rushing touchdown. More revealing than the mismatch-adjusted stat line was what happened before the ball arrived. Legend Glasker said Bachmeier’s intelligence helped him perform better on the field. Glasker caught all three of his targets for 65 yards and two touchdowns and also scored on the ground.

Against Arizona, Bachmeier’s command matters more than another efficient box score. BYU eased Bachmeier into the offense in 2025, but center Bruce Mitchell said the quarterback would operate more aggressively from Week 1 this season after improving at recognizing coverages and blitzes. Arizona gives that expanded role its first conference setting. If Bachmeier keeps recognizing coverages and blitzes and helping teammates understand what he wants them to do, BYU can punish a defense that sells out to control the run.

The specialist watch is narrower but still relevant. Cannon DeVries returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown against Utah Tech, Brody Laga produced touchbacks on all 10 kickoffs and Fuller Shurtz’s only punt traveled 54 yards. Matthias Dunn, however, missed his only field-goal attempt from 47 yards. Watch whether the strong field-position work persists and whether Dunn can convert a meaningful attempt before BYU needs one in a tighter finish.

The rest of the board

Neither outside game affects BYU’s conference standing directly. Both preferred results would strengthen a future opponent and modestly improve BYU’s playoff outlook, but each requires a sizable upset. Enjoy them as bonuses, not necessities.

Arizona State at Texas A&M: root for Arizona State

Kickoff is 9 a.m. Pacific on ABC. Arizona State has a 12% chance to win, and that upset is worth 1.4 percentage points of BYU playoff probability. The probability is 15.7% if Arizona State wins versus 14.3% if Texas A&M wins. An Arizona State win would improve the value of BYU’s Week 9 home game against the Sun Devils. This is the larger long shot and the earlier window, so it is a fun result to check before the Cougars kick off, not one to build the day around.

UCF at Pittsburgh: root for UCF

Kickoff is 12:30 p.m. Pacific on ESPN2, directly opposite BYU-Arizona. UCF has a 17% chance to win, and the upset is worth 1.5 percentage points of BYU playoff probability. The probability is 15.7% with a UCF victory versus 14.3% with a Pittsburgh victory. BYU visits UCF in Week 8, so a Knights road win at Pitt would improve the value of that future matchup. This nonconference game does not affect Big 12 standings.

Keep this one on a score alert. The screen belongs to BYU, Prassas and a secondary trying to keep Fifita from turning Damuni’s absence into the story of the earliest Cougar conference opener in 16 years.
