Rutgers took the ball at its own 4-yard line late in the 2022 opener at Alumni Stadium and ran it on 11 of the 12 plays in a 96-yard touchdown drive. The Scarlet Knights scored with 2:43 left, completed a nine-point second-half comeback and beat Boston College 22-21. That remains the latest meeting between the programs, and it supplies an uncomfortably precise memory for Friday night.
Boston College now comes home after Cincinnati rushed for 254 yards in a 34-15 win over the Eagles. BC lost its 2026 opener after reaching the Cincinnati 17 and missing a 35-yard field goal in a scoreless first half; a Bearcats fake punt prolonged their first touchdown drive, and an Eagles fumble preceded Cincinnatiâs second touchdown of the third quarter. The loss was discouraging because BC created chances before surrendering control, not because the rebuilt roster showed nothing useful.
Rutgers at Boston College

The Fan Watch model gives Boston College a 59% chance to win, making the Eagles modest favorites but leaving little room for another uneven performance.
Ted Roofâs defense held Cincinnati to 139 yards in the first half before the game turned into a tackling and run-defense failure. Bill OâBrien estimated that BC missed double-digit tackles and said the staff needed to reconsider how it practices tackling. The central question against Rutgers is whether Roofâs group can sustain its early discipline once drives lengthen and bodies tire.
Anthony Palano made 13 tackles against Cincinnati, and KP Price made 10. They were BCâs busiest tacklers; Fridayâs better sign would be fewer runners reaching them with room and fewer extra yards after contact. Rutgers should not be allowed to recreate that 2022 finish one missed fit at a time.
There is a real opening for BC. Antwan Raymond, the Big Tenâs leading returning rusher, managed 42 yards on 14 carries against UMass, and Rutgers did not score a rushing touchdown. Rutgers instead received a huge game from KJ Duff, who caught nine passes for 196 yards and all three of the Scarlet Knightsâ touchdowns. BC therefore cannot sell out recklessly against the run, but it can force Rutgers to prove that its ground game deserves the fear created by the last meeting.
Give McKenzieâs flashes a finish
Mason McKenzie completed 18 of 35 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown in his FBS debut, added 78 rushing yards and endured four sacks. Those numbers describe both sides of his opening performance. His mobility kept plays alive, while pressure and uneven passing efficiency kept BC from controlling them consistently.
The encouraging part was that McKenzie found new receivers who could change possessions. Javarius Green caught six passes for 74 yards, while Johnathan Montague Jr. turned one of his two receptions into a 23-yard touchdown. Evan Dickens also contributed a 27-yard catch from the backfield. Against Rutgers, those gains need to end in points more often; productive yardage will feel hollow again if protection breaks or another promising trip ends empty.
Boston College added 26 transfers for 2026, including 15 offensive players, nine defenders and two specialists. That overhaul makes cohesion a season-defining concern, and Cincinnati exposed breakdowns in protection, ball security and tackling without proving they will persist. Rutgers is BCâs first chance to show that those mistakes were corrected during the short week.
The outside expectations already leave little margin for drift. ACC media picked BC 16th in the 17-team preseason order. Beating a Rutgers team that also struggled in its opener would not transform the conference outlook, but it would give OâBrienâs reconstruction a credible first step instead of an 0-2 hole.
Let the night carry its proper weight
This is Boston Collegeâs 13th Red Bandanna Game, played on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The annual game honors former BC lacrosse player Welles Crowther, and that memorial meaning stands apart from whatever happens during four quarters against Rutgers.
No other game changes BCâs outlook this week. The interactive guide covers the rest of the schedule, and the methodology explains the probabilities. Against Rutgers, watch whether Palano and Price finish tackles, Roofâs defense holds up for four quarters and McKenzie turns the opportunities BC created in Cincinnati into enough points to win at home.
