Then the ceremony will give way to an offense whose next quarterback has not even been revealed.

Cam Cook is the reason that clarity does not have to arrive through spectacular quarterback play. The Jacksonville State transfer led the FBS with 1,659 rushing yards in 2025 and made the 2026 Preseason All-Big 12 team. He can be the stabilizer, the proven runner who gives an unnamed starter favorable downs and lets the offense establish something dependable immediately.
Watch Cook’s efficiency more than his raw total. West Virginia averaged only 3.7 yards per rush and converted 29.6% of its third downs last season. If Cook is repeatedly meeting defenders before he can build momentum, or if third-and-manageable keeps turning into punts, the old problems will still be visible beneath a favorable score. If the run game creates choices for the quarterback and third downs stop feeling desperate, that is meaningful progress.
Calibrate the expectation
There is room for some opening-day awkwardness. West Virginia entered spring work with 85 newcomers alongside only 34 returning players, so perfect synchronization would be an unreasonable demand in the first game. But the favorite’s cushion should create enough possessions to distinguish ordinary early-season roughness from a deeper inability to sustain drives.
That is also why a routine win can still be satisfying. It does not need to prove that the season has been transformed. It needs to show that Cook’s production travels, that the quarterback decision makes functional sense and that a radically changed roster can execute together for stretches longer than one promising series.
