Fordham occupies an unusual little pocket in North Dakota State’s new schedule. It is the lone FCS opponent, arriving between the breakthrough against Jacksonville State and the first Mountain West game at Air Force.

That makes Saturday less a referendum on whether the Bison belong in FBS than an exercise in carrying forward what already worked. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. CT on The CW Network, and the Fan Watch model gives NDSU a 94% chance to win. Expect to win. Invest emotionally in how calmly it happens.

Root for a low-variance afternoon

The most useful signs against Jacksonville State were not merely on the scoreboard. NDSU possessed the ball for more than 36 minutes, held the Gamecocks to 2-of-10 on third down and received four field goals from Drew Klein, including makes from 44, 42 and 48 yards. That is an excellent favorite’s formula. Shorten the opponent’s opportunities, end drives on defense and keep converting field position into points.

Fordham’s opener identified the one thing worth treating seriously. The Rams forced three turnovers in a 24-14 loss to Colgate, with Justin Johnson returning an interception for the game-tying touchdown and Osmun adding another interception. Fordham does not need to sustain a superior offense if NDSU supplies short fields or defensive points. Turnovers are the route by which a 6% possibility starts feeling much larger inside the stadium.

So the right rooting interest is variance control. Watch whether Nathan Hayes consistently takes the available play, whether the offense strings together long possessions and whether the kicking operation remains dependable. An early two-score lead matters less than seeing NDSU deny Fordham the abrupt momentum swing that could make an otherwise comfortable matchup irritating.

Carry the formula forward

NDSU opened its FBS era with a 33-7 win over Jacksonville State, a 373-170 advantage in total yardage and 209 rushing yards. Fordham is the only FCS team on the Bison’s 12-game schedule, so this is a sharp change in expectation. Anything close late would be uncomfortable, while steady control would be more meaningful than chasing a spectacular margin.

The useful viewing is concentrated in Fargo, where the question is whether the Bison can make the expected result feel expected and leave the improvisation, unusual preparation and higher emotional stakes for Air Force.

The percentages come from the Fan Watch methodology.
