First, erase 24-3

Duke opens its ACC title defense with a Tulane rematch, a rebuilt lineup and Nate Sheppard as the clearest source of stability.

Tulane led Duke 24-3 in the first half last September. Duke eventually pulled within seven, but Tulane recovered the ensuing onside kick and completed a 34-27 win.

That first-half ambush is the useful memory for Saturday, not because this is the same Duke team seeking a cleaner replay, but because it emphatically is not. The defending ACC champion entered 2026 with only 10 returning starters, including four apiece on offense and defense. Duke also lost its starting quarterback and all three starting receivers, while its only returning wide-receiver letterman produced seven catches last season. The entire starting defensive line must be replaced, too; all four 2025 starters are gone.

The stable figure is Nate Sheppard. He returns after setting Duke freshman records with 1,132 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns. Root for Duke to make him the center of the afternoon while the new passing operation finds its timing. A steady run game would keep the reconstructed offense out of obvious passing situations and give the new defensive front some breathing room.

Kickoff is Saturday, September 5, at 12:30 p.m. Pacific on ACC Network. The model gives Duke a 71% chance to win. The two possible branches are meaningfully different. Duke’s projected playoff chance is 2.5% with a win and 1.4% with a loss; its ACC title-game chance is 6.6% with a win and 5.1% with a loss.

So hope for more than survival. Duke is favored, at home, against the opponent that showed exactly how costly a sleepy opening can become. The encouraging version is Sheppard providing immediate stability while the rebuilt units avoid asking each other to rescue the game.

San José State at USC: root for San José State

Saturday, August 29, at noon Pacific on NBC. San José State has only a 2% chance to win, but the upset carries a +1.7 percentage-point impact on Duke’s playoff odds. In the two alternative outcomes, Duke projects at 3.9% if San José State wins and 2.2% if USC wins.

This is national-playoff housekeeping. Removing USC from the unbeaten pool helps Duke without changing the ACC standings. Enjoy the upset bid if it stays interesting, but do not emotionally budget for a 2% result.

SMU at Florida State: root for Florida State

Monday, September 7, at 4:30 p.m. Pacific on ESPN. Florida State has a 36% chance to deliver the preferred result, with a +2.1 percentage-point impact on Duke’s ACC title-game odds. Duke projects at 7.5% if Florida State wins and 5.4% if SMU wins.

This one is worth real attention. It places an ACC loss directly on SMU, one of Duke’s conference competitors, and the helpful result is plausible enough to expect a competitive game. After Duke-Tulane, this is the outside result to care about most.
